Constant Plex Audio Stutter on Nvidia Shield Pro (2019) with 1080p / 4K MKV files with DTS-HD audio

Server Version#: 1.32.6.7557-7000
Player Version#: 10.6.0.5141 (3aa3109
<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>

When I attempt to playback any of my 4K/Blu Ray rips w/ DTS-HD audio (MKV containers stored on my Synology Plex Server), I experience a consistent audio stutter every 25-30 seconds.

When I noticed this issue today, I observed that my Shield Pro w/ Plex app version was #: 9.13.1.37459 (39e89c99). I’ve since updated to the latest Plex app (10.6.0.5141 (3aa3109) and experience the same audio stutter. It is worth noting that the files are not Dolby Atmos audio. The majority of the MKV files I have are DTS HD 5.1 tracks that are converted to Multi-Channel 5.1 by my Sonos Beam Gen 2. Over the last year, I’ve experienced this issue on a few occasions and rebooting the Shield or force closing the Plex app has resolved it previously. However, now the issue persists and makes watching content a huge pain in the neck.

At first I thought, maybe it is a bandwidth issue with the 4K MKV files? I then attempted to play a Blu-ray rip of Robocop that comes with a DTS-HD track. The Blu-ray (non-4k) rip experienced the same audio stutter as found on the other 4KUHD MKV files.

When I attempt to play files with Stereo Tracks or even a file with Dolby Atmos, I did not get audio stutter. I have Seinfeld which has a Stereo PCM track that played back with no stutter. I also tested my direct 4k rip of Game of Thrones with an Atmos track and had no audio stutter as observed with the DTS-HD audio tracks. After trying various other tv shows with Stereo PCM audio no stutter occurs.

Hard wired setup LAN (no Wi-Fi connection to Synology via Shield). Shield Pro is connected via LAN hard-wired to Synology NAS direct playing my 4K and Blu-Ray rips. My Shield Pro is set to pass through audio in order to receive Dolby Atmos and DTS decoding on my Sonos.

I’ve found multiple threads about this here and have linked the most recent below. It appears there is no way of resolving the random stuttering. Is there a plan to update something on the Plex app to resolve the issue?

I just wanted to chime in and confirm that I seem to be experiencing the same issue. I haven’t tested enough to determine how common it is, but I’ve noticed it in the last couple files I’ve tried which have 5.1 HD audio. One file is labelled TRUEHD 5.1 (AC3 codec) and the other is DTS-HD MA 5.1 (DCA codec). They are both in MKV containers like yours, but I don’t know if that would make a difference. I don’t recall this happening on recent files with Atmos audio, but will have to investigate to be sure.

Edit: This is happening on at least one file with Atmos audio.

My server is a docker container on Unraid and my client is a Shield TV Pro (2019). Server version is 1.40.1.8111, client version is 10.9.1.5708.

The stuttering is every ~30 seconds, no amount of reboots fixes it.

Can confirm the same issues, shield pro 2019 and windows server. Direct play with any file type has random stuttering and 4k HDR with 7.1 True HD audio has more issues.

Still experiencing the issue today. Anytime I attempt to play one of my 4K or Blu-Ray rips with a DTS-HD audio track, I cringe. :expressionless:

For now I stick to watching Atmos or Dolby Digital 5.1/Stereo files. Maybe at some point in the future we get an answer or solution for this. Possibly when a new Apple TV or infuse update is available that allow for flawless Atmos playback.

Please tell me the exact specifications of what’s being played and what the player environment is.

I have Shield Pro 2019, app 10.10.1, Onkyo TX-RZ avr, LG C1 4K without issues on ANY codecs

Apple converts everything to LPCM so that doesn’t really count

Here’s one of my rips.

I have a Shield Pro (2019) connected to an LG B9 tv and LG SNY9G soundbar. I’m 90% sure that it’s Shield->soundbar->TV, but can’t easily check because the cables are all super hidden. Regardless, even if it’s Shield->TV->soundbar, both devices support E-ARC.

A few examples that stuttered for me:

Above I stated that 5.1 didn’t give me issues, but these 5.1 files did:

It’s possible my issue is a different one from the original report since I’m experiencing stuttering on TRUEHD tracks, not just DTS-HD. But, since the behavior is the same, and they’re both high quality codecs, I think it’s all part of the same problem.
