Coming back to my original post: I have tested 1.18.8.2527 beta and all appears to be well. I will monitor it over the next few days and post another bug report if it crashes again. I don’t know what was wrong with the 1.18.7.x series, but none of those were stable for me.

On which MacOS version?

On Catalina I’m having no such problems, this problem seems very isolated are you using a AV, try turning it off for awhile.
