Controlling Server Upload Rate

Server Version#: 1.19.1.2701
Internet Speed: 500 mbps down / 50 mbps up
Router: Netgear R7000

Hello all! After much googling, i haven’t been able to make much progress with this so i’m turning to you guys. My problem is, due to the burst upload of streaming content, it causes Lag every few seconds while gaming. I’ve tried using my router’s QoS feature without success. It killed my internet speed in the process. I’ve used Netlimiter to limit Plex’s outbound traffic to 20 mbps, which did just that. However the burst up to it’s max of 20 mbps still causes the lag. I have DLNA turned off and the connection speed listed as 25 mbps.

The only other option i can think of is purchasing a higher end router to handle the QoS better but i wanted to learn a bit more about this before throwing money at it. Thanks for your time and my apologies if this is the wrong section!

In case anyone stumbles on to this later, one thing that has helped improve the situation is flashing a different firmware (DD-WRT) onto my router and using those QoS settings. While it does cut my max upload / download, it prevents these constant spikes from messing up my connection. Instead of 200 ms pings, it goes from 20’s to 30’s, which is definitely more tolerable.

If i find a better solution, i’ll follow up.

Scratch that, it doesn’t resolve the upload usage. And when someone scrobbles through the video, it destroys my connection, even with a Ubiquiti Edgerouter 4. I’m not sure what i can do to prevent Plex from soaking up too much of my upload.
