Player Version#: Haven’t narrowed down the specific player causing it
Hello, I’ve had plex and remote streaming functioning for years, with very little or no instances of it causing lag spikes during video games(World of Warcraft, League of legends, Apex Legends). In the last week or two I’ve noticed major lag spikes while remote streams are going on, with varying results. Sometimes it’s just one or two streams other times it’s 6-7 streams and I get the lag every minute or two a quick hard lag and then things balance back out and work fine. I have 40 mbps upload and I restrict remote stream bitrate to 4 mbps and the internet upload speed is on 32 as I was trying to leave a buffer.
I did read something about plex streaming and the way it handles upload is it spikes and copies out a ton of data every 1 minute or so which kind of lines up but why is it doing this if I’m restricting the speed in the settings.
I’ve read around on other topics over the years on reddit and other things and other people have seen this same behavior over the years and it sounds like some of them resolved it with limiting speed via what I said above, others suggested QoS settings on their router. I’ve been tinkering with the QoS settings but they aren’t super great and the last couple I’ve tried (restricting speed of the plex servers upload, prioritizing gaming pc traffic) hasn’t worked.
The off part is this hasn’t happened as frequent or as much as it has in the last few weeks, I don’t recall a specific update coming out causing this so I wasn’t sure if anyone else has any other suggestions and figured this could help others if they run into this issue.
Let me know if server logs would help and if anyone has any other suggestions I’d greatly appreciate it, I’d like to game while people watch things and I don’t have the option of symmetrical speeds through my ISP yet.
