What server logs do I need to post?
Hello All,
I’ve recently moved over to running my Plex on my Debian server (in the past I ran it on Windows) but it is causing me some various problems with some media not playing and me receiving the error posted above.
The issue first started with just a few files that wouldn’t play but now it looks like I can’t get any of them to play…
In the past I have always chosen to force direct play on my local network as my devices have no issue and I’m not one to waste efforts on transcoding when my local network and devices work just fine.
Why is Plex transcoding? And how can I resolve this?
Ok, I figured it out, but unsure why it all of the sudden popped up. I run my library database off of a different drive due to the size of my library and due to that I needed to add exec to the Fstab for that mount as Plex technically couldn’t execute the files from the non root folder.
The codecs are stored along with your metadata (Library).
When you move this to a new location, since the codecs are executable code, the location (drive) where they are stored must also have the “execution permitted” flags set in the fstab mount.
All OS’s automatically set this for the first (installation and boot) drive
Some set it by default for everything while others do not.
I think the strange part of it all is that it all stopped working overnight. Things worked last night and then this morning it stopped working. There were no changes between that time. Either way it is now fixed and hopefully won’t be an issue going forward.
