Conversion failed, the transcoder exited due to an error

I pulled these logs right after I got the error on my TV. My PMS is wired to my router as is my Hisense TV. This error pops up sporadically in my home.

The bigger issue I have is it happens quite often when outside my home like on my mothers TV or my aunts laptop. Sometimes I can close the program or try another video and then come back to it and it will work.

This is an error I have been just dealing with for some time but I am finally at a point of needing it fixed. My aunt is really missing out on some of my recordings.

Thanks in advance for any help.

This is similar (in symptoms) to the problem of running out of tcp ports - however, the logs do not show excessive number of requests that could lead to using up the 16K dynamic tcp ports pool in windows

Do you run proxy software / vpn that may be interfering with the requests Plex is making for loopback (127.0.0.1) between Plex Media Scanner and Plex Transcoder and Plex Media Server processes ?

I can see the transcoder failing to make a loopback request to Plex Media Server process - eg

Feb 01, 2021 02:49:20.101 [18576] ERROR - [Transcoder] [tcp @ 007fee40] Connection to tcp://127.0.0.1:32400 failed: Error number -138 occurred
Feb 01, 2021 02:49:20.175 [19112] DEBUG - Jobs: 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\Plex Transcoder.exe' exit code for process 14124 is 1 (failure)

and I can also see the scanner failing immediately when trying to make a request to the server process

Feb 01, 2021 00:25:35.823 [20300] ERROR - Error issuing curl_easy_perform(handle): 7
Feb 01, 2021 00:25:35.823 [20300] WARN - HTTP error requesting GET http://127.0.0.1:32400/:/metadata/notify/cullTimeline?librarySectionID=3&sinceTime=1612166735 (7, Couldn't connect to server) (Failed to connect to 127.0.0.1 port 32400: Address not available)
Feb 01, 2021 00:25:35.823 [12892] ERROR - Error issuing curl_easy_perform(handle): 7
Feb 01, 2021 00:25:35.823 [12892] WARN - HTTP error requesting PUT http://127.0.0.1:32400/activities/82b48906-7c0e-481f-9493-0ff83899f100?percentComplete=0 (7, Couldn't connect to server) (Failed to connect to 127.0.0.1 port 32400: Address not available)

As this is happening almost immediately rather than after thousands of requests, it suggests that there must be some external factor eg a vpn or proxy or perhaps some other program using up all the tcp ports in windows

You can eliminate the tcp port exhaustion issue by checking the Windows Event Log (Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System and filter for event ID 4227)

Sorry I got confused with all the places we were talking…lol

I do have Express VPN but have put Plex as an exception. It works for the most part but I do see some issues when trying to scan library files (Only my TV shows, no other library has the issue) and have to turn it off to get them to come through. Also I am not able to get to any settings below “STATUS” when I have the VPN running.

I have Movies, 4K Movies, and Hallmark as different libraries. The last 2 needed to be upgraded and I refreshed the metadata now. Movies, TV, and Sports did not need this update.

I had my aunt try to connect after that and she was unable to connect continuing to get the conversion error.

Since you had said something about VPN’s I did try with the VPN turned off and she had no issues at that point, no error. So obviously there is an issue with the VPN and Plex not playing well together. My VPN has helped me to make the exception in the software for the PMS exe to allow Plex to work or connect through the VPN, but as I said above I do still see issues when it is running.

I have attached the logs after running the tests tonight and was wondering if there is anymore help that can be given to find a work around? Is there a different exe or program I need to add to my VPN?

Thank you again for all of your help.

Cannot help with vpn, If the issue only arises with vpn then stop using the vpn with plex or investigate how to add exclusions to Plex to make sure requests between Plex process are not impacted or blocked by the vpn
