Could not create PlexData share

That’s what some are seeing and why I made the changes I did.

Delete the share
Recreate the share, on any volume you wish, and assign permissions as you wish.
Restart PMS.

OK - so I got the same error today after updating to 3181 release.

Logged in using Admin.
Using the “FileStation” application and trying to create a Shared folder called PlexData, but I cannot do it. The Folder name text input box gets red and the error message says:

“This folder name has already existed. Please choose another one.”

I tried to locate this folder using Filestations but cannot find it in any volume.

My box is a QNAP TS-453bmini and latest QTS.

I have made several changes since 1.20.0.3181.
I am anticipating the changes will be in 1.20.2 because it was too late to include them in 1.20.1.

You use Control Panel - Shared Folders to manage the “PlexData” share. FileStation doesn’t do that.

If QTS thinks you have a shared folder already, the Shared Folders app will list .

Can you show me what you have?

No need any longer…
I found the place - but accidentaly deleted the wrong folder PlexMedia instead of PlexData…

So all my media gone.

Nope, is not.
Luckily the family photos are not originally stored there.

After hiding under a rock for some days, I did some research. Found out that deleting a Shared folder not always deletes the actual data folder (think there is checkbox for that).

So recreated the my PlexMedia with the same name and same path - and is happily back on track again!

Hello, just wanted to add, same problem on a QNAP TVS-472XT running QNAP 4.4.3.1400 and PMS 1.20.1.3213.
Hopefully there will be a workaround within PMS 1.20.2.
Are there any concrete plans on when 1.20.2 will be released?

I don’t know when 1.20.2 will be released but the changes have been approved by QA. We’re only waiting for Engineering to include them in their next release.

The “WorkAround” is to manually create the “PlexData” share anywhere you want it. DataVol1 makes the most sense. Assign permissions as you deem appropriate. If a user doesn’t have permission to the share, they will not see it in FileStation (QTS security is active here)

I’ve changed how it works. I really apologize for whatever is causing so many problems for everyone.

In the new update will be:

I will not attempt to create the PlexData share.
If you want to use it, create the share. This is equivalent to loading the package PMSLibShare with one bonus. PlexData will track / follow your PMS metadata if you “Migrate To” another volume. (Dane22 and I felt this was needed)
If you already have a PlexData share, which you use for other purposes, OR want to disable this feature completely,
a. SSH into the device
b. cd /sh*/CA*/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer
c. touch .disablePlexDataSymlink

Hi all,

i had the same problem on QNAP 451 with actual QTS.
How I solved it:

look, if directory “CACHEDEV1_DATA/PlexData/” exist
change to /share
check if link PlexData exists (lrwxrwxrwx 1 admin administrators 24 2020-08-26 19:49 PlexData → CACHEDEV1_DATA/PlexData/)
when this link points to wrong or not existing directory (in my case to /PlexData) delete it
5 create correct link using “ln -s CACHEDEV1_DATA/PlexData PlexData”

In my case after doing this everything worked fine

Doing this totally fixed the error… running PMS 1.20.1.3232 on TVS-682 running QTS 4.4.3.1400 Build 20200817.

I was able to confirm with Engineering –

1.20.2 is when the PlexData share optional usage change will be released.

Above, I’ve shown how to completely disable the feature.

I did try to delete the plexdata at the control panel/shared folder and I get the "are you sure you want to remove the selected share (iso shares will be unmounted)
also delete the data (mounted iso images will not be deleted??

Im trying not to lose all my data like I did 8 mos ago. Any help would be great!

While it looks like your Library is right there, it’s not.

Reality is:

PlexData / Plex Media Server
-------- symlink ----->
/share/CACHEDEV*_DATA/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer/Library/Plex Media Server

It’s a trick that works with FileStation and QTS security to hide it for those you don’t want to grant access (PlexData is only visible in FileStation if you’ve granted permission to that user)

Would you like the updated plex.sh now?

Sorry Chuck but it appears you have lost me on that last post?

Instead of deleting that plexdata file would it be easier for me to install another version of PMS and how would I exactly do that without have to delete anything?

Was able to remove Plexdata. Then shut down PMS. Added a Plexdata folder with the proper sharing on datavol1. Restarted PMS and still no go.

I was receiving the plexdata error after updating to 1.20.1.3252-a78fef9a9 but also the server stopped working when I did that update. I am not sure what is going on. I Deleted the plexdata share and recreated it. I no longer get the error but the server still doesnt work. I am on the verge of panicking. Here is the log. The PlexData creation error is not fatal to PMS starting.
In PMS 1.20.2, PlexData will no longer show any errors. Its usage will be completely optional (works if present - ignored if not present)

As for PMS not starting, may I please see the entire ZIP set?

Go into PlexData,
Click “Plex Media Server”
Right-Click “Logs” -> Compress (generates a ZIP file)
Upload the composite ZIP here.
