"Couldn't retrieve the play queue for this item. Please try again"

Plex Media Server.log (1.1 MB) Server Version#: 1.20.3.3437
Player Version#: 7.8.1

When playing videos in my home movies library, this error occurs on ios: “Couldn’t retrieve the play queue for this item. Please try again”. They don’t work in Apple TV either. The server, iOS app and Apple TV app are all up to date. The videos do play in the Plex web application and my Mac server app. Also, videos in my Movies and TV Shows libraries play fine. Strangely, on Apple Tv, if I just press play on the “Timeline” view, the first video will play. But I can’t choose the videos individually, in either the timeline or Library view.

I tried doing some research, optimized the databases, restarted all apps/servers, found something about turning off “preroll” but I don’t have that on.

This issue seems to be around for a while. I just paid for Plex, so please someone look into it asap. This is unacceptable.
PS: It started happening after adding a bunch of photos/videos.

Same problem here. It was all working fine before so not sure if a recent update broke this. I have more details on the weird things that are happening here

Would like to bump this. Still having this problem, and I’ve been updating the Plex server and clients every time it’s available, hoping it will be resolved. Does anyone have a solution? To clarify, this didn’t use to happen - I used to be able to play my home movies just fine in iOS and TVOS.

Additional information here: Unable to play .mov & .mp4 videos on iOS devices

Thank you!

Obviously this is not a solution, but it is a band-aid (at least for me).

If you play via the shuffle button it will play your (at least my) media.

Obviously this is not ideal, and if you have a large uncategorized library this wouldn’t be helpful. However if you are ble to partition your library a bit, and don’t mind a bit of tediousness, it might be manageable until they patch the bug. Good luck, hope this helps a bit.

Bumping again? Still no fix that I’m aware of.

updated to latest beta version pms today and now ios devices are getting this error on most videos

I’ve been getting this error for about 18 months now. Still no fix.

Same issue on iOS. Home videos won’t play.

me too,why so slow

I also have been having this issue for the past 6 months… before that time it was working fine. For me, this issue doesn’t happen on the Mac OS app, or on my Android TV app. But I use Plex mainly on iOS and TVOS where the issue has been happening, and it is really annoying. All my apps have been up to date. Please fix this otherwise, great app

This problem has now been around for a little while and as Plex Pass user it’s getting a bit frustrating to see that no ETA was provided… I am not even sure that Plex is working to resolve the issue…

Hi all - so I have a fix, which wasn’t exactly what I wanted but now things work with no problems. I simply separated out my photos and home videos into two separate libraries. Before they were in one Photos library, and the videos used to have no problem playing from there, before this error started appearing.

Now, the photos are, of course, still in a Photos library, and my home videos (iOS) are in a Other Videos library. They now play no problem on any client/app. It wasn’t exactly what I wanted because I like to keep my photos/videos together in a timeline, but it is what it is. At least they play.

Please PLEX team, we need this fixed ASAP. So long to have this sorted!

Yes please, try to convince the managers to increase the severity of this issue! Most likely it is can have different reasons, but the same error popped up in 2018 already: AppleTV 4K, Synology DS1817 - Couldn't retrieve the play queue for this item.
