I am failing miserably trying create a certificate with win-acme. I have found some very good step by step instructions on how to create a certificate and they all end at validate your DNS. I search to web and get conflicting and incomplete answers. Create a dns txt entry with URL and Token. What token? Where do I get it? Is it under a rock in the front yard?
Please…Is there anyone that can give me step by step on how to complete the process to get a certificate. Thanks
You will not be able to use self-signed certificates in Plex.
Why do you want to create a certificate in the first place?
Plex is by default providing your server with a FQDN and a fitting (and officially signed) certificate. Without the need for you to do anything.
The only use case for an own certificate is when you want to use a custom server domain name for remote access. Which in turn is only necessary if you need to circumvent a double-NAT situation or other complicated internet connectivity situations.
You have brought up several good points but is does not answer my question. If I can not use a certificate then what are they talking about in this support article https://support.plex.tv/articles/206225077-how-to-use-secure-server-connections/ ? What is the purpose of certificate boxes in server>settings>network>advance?
I have never worked with certificates before and I am learning that is why I am asking my original question. Even if I deiced not to use a certificate I would still like my question answered to better understand the process. Thanks
I said you cannot use self-signed certificates.
Your certificate must be “trusted” by all the devices which run a Plex client. In order to do that, your certificate must be signed by a trustworthy certificate authority, which itself is trusted in return by all those devices.
I recommend you to read about how security certificates work, and how they are employed in web browsers and other software. This is not something that I can do in here.
Look for the keywords “chain of trust”.
