Credits Detection

Server Version#: 4.101.1
Player Version#: No idea

Credits Detection started after a server restart; this was set to only run during maintenance period which I have set to 02:00 to 05:00. However it has not stopped despite it being well passed 05:00.
Please let me know if this is expected behaviour because if so I’ll have to disable it as my media library is on a NAS and I have the hard drives set to hibernate if not used after 20 minutes. The Detect Credits running is preventing that from happening.
I had the same issue with the Detected Intro setting ( I think it’s called that); I set it to only run during the maintenance period but it just carried on after the maintenance end time I’ve had to disable that too.

Credits detection means the HDDs are used, so that’s correct. Credits cannot be detected without access to the actual video files.

You might want to check if credit detection is scheduled to happen only during maintenance hours, or also when new media is added.

This happening might be a wakeup call that your server is continually removing and re-adding items to your Plex libraries. Which in turn might be caused by you hibernating the HDDs or other factors.
See that “Empty trash automatically after every scan” is DISabled and keep it that way.

I noticed on my Windows Plex Server the CPU usage was high for extended periods all day, and Plex Media Scanner process was the culprit.

Approximately how long does it take to analyze a typical 2 hour movie? I’ll just disable the feature if it takes a long time to scan my library as it causes my PC to consume much more power while scanning.

Does it just scan the end of video files or does it have to scan the whole movie/episode?

It is not the whole movie which is being analyzed. In my experience (even on an older Intel Core i7 4770 CPU) it rarely takes more than 1 minute per film or episode.

It was set to “as a scheduled task” but still continued to run outside the maintenance times.

I’ve since disabled it as the it’s benefits didn’t outweigh the downsides of constantly having the hard drives powered up.

You are aware that this is a process which will only be going on until every video has its credits detected?

Yes, of course, but I have nearly 9TB of media files and each TV episode (not series, episode) was taking about 3 minutes to be analysed and when some series have more than 160 episodes it’s going to days to complete. If would only run during maintenance time it would be okay but once it starts it doesn’t stop.

Could you provide some server logs? This shouldn’t be possible.

Sure, I stopped it running this morning but as you can see, it was running all night and didn’t stop at 05:00 when the maintenance end time is.

Ah I see what the problem is here.

Looks like you changed the path of the library:

e.g. your path changed from \\192.168.0.7\Media\Movies to Z:\

Feb 15, 2023 20:58:21.781 [3464] INFO - Part rename detected [\\192.168.0.7\Media\Movies\Movie Name\Movie Name.mkv] was renamed [Z:\Movie Name\Movie Name.mkv]

When this happens we force all the jobs to re-run, including the credits detection.

I would recommend restarting the server to stop any currently runing jobs, if the scan has finished and all the new paths have been saved then the credits detection won’t re-run outside of the scheduled window (unless you rename the paths again).

Thanks for the info; unfortunately I stopped it from running so it will not be complete I’m afraid; does this mean that even if I set it to run only during scheduled times it will once again ignore that until it completes the run?

This will work:

  • Disable the credits detection completely.
  • Let the scan run and process all the path changes.
  • Then re-enable the credits detection to run only as a scheduled task again.

Thanks for the help, I’m not sure how this happened but after seeing the entry you posted to my library path changing and the date being the 16th Feb (I’ve not made any changes to the library path since setting up this 2019 server late last year. So I took a look at the TV Series library path and noticed somehow there were two paths listed, one as in shown in the logs “Z:<etc” and one \192.168.0.7\Media\
I’ve removed the Z:<etc> and things seem to be scanning much faster now.
So, thanks again for your help…
