I’ve added this under “Metadata & Logos” as “Background art not loading for all users”. Thanks!
Thanks!
How does it work on regular Plex?
When I’m using the normal Plex app I can only get it to show stereo in headset. On Infuse I have multi channel and Atmos
On a 1st gen apple tv 4k:
-
Played untouched DVD rips, i.e. mpeg2. Something was really wrong with this playback with both spatial and color fidelity being horrible. The old plex is fine here.
-
Bandwidth from server is low…like 1/7 of the bandwidth of the “old” plex client. (100mbit/s vs 700mbit/s)
The experimental AppleTV player that has been in testing does support multichannel Spatial Audio on AirPods Pro, but not atmos. The public player only supports stereo.
MPEG2 is broken and one of the issues with Live TV as well. Thanks!
I’m sure it’s been mentioned, but I am having the jumpy playbook as if I was using the new player instead of old player. Makes this unusable for a lot of my MKV files.
Not sure it’s mpeg2 that’s the issue, an mkv rip of an old mpeg2 encoded bluray (at 1080p24) plays back fine.
The experimental player is that something that I can sign up for since I have Plex Pass?
In regards to Atmos it’s not lossless Atmos but just DD+ like streaming uses which works in Infuse. So I’m guessing it would work here to.
For the life of me, I can’t get down to the tabs on the left side at all. When I select the Live TV, I see the Plex channels guide (and it is showing the preview of the first channel), but I can’t even navigate down to that guide to change anything.
I’m really sort of surprised they released this with so many bugs - just in basic navigation.
I’m curious, is Dolby Atmos support (with a Home Theatre Receiver) a feature that is in the works for this new version?
The public app currently downgrades Atmos content to Multi Channel audio.
This is more of a feature request than an issue, as even the public app doesn’t do this.
I would like the ability to add content to Playlists from within the Apple TV app.
No HDR10+ support.
does the AppleTV itself even support HDR10+ output? I didn’t think it did.
Latest Appletv 4K w/ 128gb connected via ethernet
Experimental player
Will occasionally stop playing direct
Workaround is to change from original to convert automatically and it will transcode the file.
Hi @anthonyfuller please use the Apple TV Player Beta thread for comments of the Experimental Player so that Craig sees them.
This thread is for the new Plex Preview app with the new UI/UX.
Thanks!
Yes, 3rd generation AppleTV 4K added support for HDR10+.
In my testing of Preview 7 - 2025.3.0 (844)
- Home Screen loading time does appear to have improved in this release. However, for movie/tv detail pages some metadata appears to be cached locally on device and for others it is not. When metadata caching for items occurs, app does feel more responsive, but when metadata needs to continually re-download from providers, the app feels outdated and unresponsive. Content caching seems random, as some recently accessed movies still need to re-download content every time their detail page is accessed.
- If Plex is unable to download a “Logo” for a film, that space in the UI is left empty. There is no title displayed on the page.
- I was able to access LiveTV, but playback controls are not accessible with either button clicks or swiping on Siri Remote during LiveTV Playback (ie unable to access subtitle menu or the three dot menu on the right). The Back button does exit the playing content, but it looks to “crash” back to the main app Home page rather than the guide.
- During media playback or TV/Movie items, the “Playback Options” menu is empty.
- During media playback, there is no consistency in navigating “down” to bring up the playback controls. Sometimes it goes to the “Pause” button, sometimes it goes to the “Three Dots Menu” button, some times it goes to the “Subtitle” button, and sometimes it takes multiple downward swipes or presses to get past the “playback position bar”.
- During media playback, there is no way to “hide” playback controls manually once you bring the menu up. Swiping/clicking “Up” on the remote does not hide the bar, and using the “back” button just exits media playback instead of closing the control bar. Going “down” on the playback controls goes to a chapter selection screen and does not hide them. (Personally, I tend to agree with the sentiment of other testers that using the Apple UI would be a better decision here. It looks more modern and the user base has an understanding of how it works).
- “Scanning” through playing media with a swipe has a weird “runaway/rubberbanding” type effect where the playhead is all over the place.
- While Multichannel Spatial Audio with AirPods Pro is available on the iOS app in this version, it does not function on the AppleTV version.
- When “Match Framerate” is enabled in the AppleTV settings, audio is out of sync when using “Airplay” audio devices, including AirPods Pro, but in sync when playing on TV speakers or through wired sound system. When “Match Framerate” is disabled, audio on Airplay devices (ie AirPods Pro) is in sync.
- DV/HDR content tone mapping settings for SDR Screens now follow the main AppleTV “Match Content” setting. There is no option to set screen type in the Preview App like there is in the Public App (ie HDR vs SDR). This means you may get blown out or “flat” color on HDR media when played back on SDR screen if the Apple TV “Match Content” setting for “Dynamic Range” is enabled. But if “Match Content->Dynamic Range” is turned off, proper tone mapping occurs. Affects Direct Play and transcoded content.
- “Navigation Cursor” disappears if you access another app and return to Plex Preview, or if you access Apple TV control center.
- Subtitles are now properly reporting playback in dashboard and Tautulli.
- No easy way to get back to the top navigation bar from the Home or Library screens. In current public app, users can just swipe left (from pretty much any screen) to access Plex Settings and Navigation. On the Preview App, hitting the “back” button doesn’t jump users to the top, users must swipe or click up multiple times to reach the Navigation bar. (Personally, I tend to agree with a lot of the testers that the left side navigation menu is a better option then reverting to a top menu for a non-touch screen device as it cuts down on number of interaction inputs).
I’ll continue testing this and the iOS version, but I ask Plex to re-consider the top Navigation Bar and new Playback Interface controls. I personally prefer the ease and speed of the Left Navigation bar in the current Public release, and I think that Apple’s Playback UI (or even the current Plex Public UI) is far superior in ease of use, funcitonality, and aesthetics than this new Interface that we’ve seen in both the iOS and AppleTV preview apps. I understand the want to “democratize” both code and interface across all the clients, but Apple TV users pay a premium for their devices because they want apps that are fast, reliable, consistent, and look good, and this new Playback interface is not that.
I would add to the list that I can’t figure out how to delete an episode or movie from the user interface (something that was fairly easy in the previous generation version of Plex).
And the same applies to the iOS version of the app actually.
I don’t know if the feature is missing or just hidden where I’m not expecting it to be, but it’s not making my life easy.
so here is also my testing of PLEX 2025.3.0 (844):
-
App feels still extrem laggy in comparison to current version and is kind of unusable. Feels like half my AppleTV cpu and ram bricked or the battery of the remote is empty and most of my clicks weren’t recognized. At this state its not even close to switch from beta to RC…
-
After startup there is no local media showing up. I need to go to libraries and mark as favorite, then go back to home and then my continue watching and other lists show up. Would be ok for a first start, but I have to marks as favorite ANY time I start the App, because the favorite mark get lost every time I close the Plex preview App.
-
I needed to enable feedback sounds to find out that my click was accepted. Often the cursor moves 3-5 seconds after the feedback sound and often there is no indicator where I am right now in the app.
-
Back button often did not work at all and have to click a second time
-
no background or logos at all for local media. only on universal watchlist backgrounds show up
-
no option to delete local media
-
sometimes the mini info stuck if I switch to another object. like on continue watching with first entry Family Guy mini info about next to watch episode. Switch right to SILO but the info kept staying Family Guys mini info above
-
Poster differ from current version to preview beta in watchlist (for example Megalopolis)
-
on discover the view with trending trailers there is above a tiny pixel row from recommended on your services which looks extrem poor. at first I thought of artefacts or broken beamer

-
recommended watchlist is missing items in comparison to current version. Seems to be limited to 20 items while current release can be set to higher entries
-
there is the same bug like in current version with continue watching in recommended watchlist, that the newest watch item doesn’t show up as first entry. It shows as the last 22 entry which is cut in beta by limitation and in current version it hides under “see all”
-
Watchlist and discover are again not ready to customize or interoperable with local items, like create (smart) playlists with watchlisted movies
-
watch from these locations is not ready now in beta, but there is also a bug in current with some locations like disney+ and magentaTV which can’t used right now, because disney+ just shows “not available in your area” after starting through plex. After quitting that popup, search in disney+ then the searched item shows up and can be played. MagentaTV is a problem about two apps (1.0 and 2.0). Plex references on magentaTV 1.0, but most users must use magentaTV 2.0 already
-
all in all there are so much more clicks needed as before, that this can’t be a good UI to be released and if this beta would be the current version, then I would not think about to buy a Plex pass again for that bad beta experience…
