Current Missing Features & Bugs with the AppleTV App Experience Preview

2025.5.0 now plays DV profile 5, but on TV it won’t trigger the Dolby Vision mode of the TV. Similar to HDR from the same beta I guess, so this is tonemapping to SDR?

EDIT: After doing more testing, explanation of the current behaviour on my LG G4:

  • If your Apple TV is in SDR with match dynamic range on/off, the file will play in SDR with the correct colours, but won’t trigger dolby vision mode on the TV. Hopefully this behaviour can be changed in an update (the app should always try the DV mode first) because some of us prefer keeping the interface in SDR as it doesn’t constantly switch to a black screen when watching SDR content in other apps eg. YouTube.
  • If your Apple TV is in Dolby Vision with match dynamic range on/off, the file will play in DV and will also trigger the DV mode on the TV.
  • Trying to play a DV p5 mkv will fail regardless
  • If you have a multi audio DV p5 file, you are locked in one track (not a problem on the webOS app)

OTA live tv will always transcode atm, I assume this will be fixed in the future? I know some of the html apps will always transcode so hopefully that’s not the new default.

Live TV guide can scroll forward when just trying to scroll down and get stuck/unable to track back to what’s on at the current time.

No DVR schedule on the new app yet, hopefully still planned.

Can pretty much use it over the default app now, very good usability for me.

And just to say, love the redesign despite a lot of the backlash. Looks really nice and will be very nice for all apps to look essentially identical.

If you select “switch profile” and select a PIN protected profile the keypad is on the bottom of the screen. It is nearly impossible to enter the code.

BTW: Will the clock on the top right corner return?

This also means “type on your iPhone” doesn’t work. This is a huge step backwards for accessibility.

Was watching an episode of TV and the Apple TV screen saver kicked in for no reason and video playback stopped.

Audio continues for a second or 2 after pausing playback with HomePods.

Performance seems much better to me in the latest build? Switching profiles is still too cumbersome and I think old side navigation is better than this top navigation

Came across two new bugs / issues:
Player does not Auto-Rotate GoPro Videos

Voice button on Apple TV Remote, and iPhone Keyboard on Remote app, does not work while searching

Overall page loading performance seems to be much better in this release, however there does appear to be a new bug in playback with UHD media where audio and video will “hang” every few minutes for about a second and then playback catches up. I’m also seeing random plex home user errors on app launch is “auto sign in” is not enabled. This requires me to choose a user twice and input the passcode.

I hit pause and let the screen saver come on. On resume, video and sound played for a second and then got a spinning circle. I had back out of playback and resume from home screen to get playback to start again.

Play button still doesn’t work for the up next items or any item for that matter.

I’m using paired homepods for playback. On pause the video will stop instantaneously but audio will continue for a second or more before it pauses. On resume things are still in sync.

Nice to see that Season local extras are now displaying for Apple TV devices. Looks like all 3 types of local tv extras (Show, Season, and Episode) and now visible in the Apple TV client.

Same here - the performance is what I can only describe as less awful.

It’s still super glitchy. There will be instances where interactions are immediate, and instances where it takes several seconds before the app responds to a “click”.

Going “back” from a sub-menu to a top-level menu (e.g. in Settings) almost always returns me to the top of the list, rather than to the context of where I was before.

There’s still no “physics” for focus interactions, so everything feels very stiff and lifeless.

Search is still awful.

And the player UI is still not AVPlayerViewController.

So far during the preview period I have refrained from commenting on my experience, but it is becoming apparent that the design of the AppleTV app is “locked” as there has been no iteration of the design and navigation of the app, despite lengthy feedback in these forums.

My main concern, other than not using the native AppleTV player, is the navigation.

The top down navigation is truly awful and not usable.

If I am in one library and scrolled down through the library, if I then want to change which library I’m in I have to scroll all the way to the top, scroll up again to show the filter bar, and then scroll up again to show the favourited libraries. There is no way that I have found to quickly access the library bar.

You can press the back button on the AppleTV remote and the “Library” button will highlight, but clicking on in does nothing.

The other main gripe I have is that most of my files contain a stereo audio track and a surround sound track with the stereo audio track marked as default. The existing public app is smart enough that on the AppleTV it will auto select the surround sound track, but the preview app will select the stereo track by default. If I change the audio track during playback it will remember the selection for that file.

These limitations have meant that I am disinclined to continue to try these previews, and if the app is released without significant improvement and the old app taken away, then I will have no choice but to use Infuse (which I’m starting to use more and more).

i think that my lip sync issue has finally been mostly fixed in this latest update (tried a couple of items and it mostly seems fine i think). Anyone else having issues of HDR looking overly bright / washed out when compared to infuse?

One bug im desperate for them to fix is pressing the ‘back button’ to get rid of the player overlay, currently pressing back just exits the video which is not intuitive or helpful.

There was some information shared here:

Apple Player Update Beta Testing - #1245 by hsousa

And I would like to express my alarm.

In that (welcome, detailed) post, this one comment stuck out:

goal of having a consistent Plex playback experience across all platforms

I would like to give some strident feedback: this is not a thing that Plex users want. I do not demand that Plex be identical on each platform.

We want Plex experiences that make sense on each platform.

I want the player itself to make sense, taking advantages of the features and quirks of each platform. I don’t want - or need - the player widgets to look similar between devices. I want them to actually be native for the platform, not to look the same as Plex on a Roku/Android/Television/Web Page.

I want the search experience to make sense on each platform. I don’t want to give up each platform’s native keyboard, with extensions and accessibility and native speed.

My Mother can pick up and use most Mac and Apple TV apps because she is familiar with how the platforms behave. She knows how to use the remote. She knows how to use her phone to extend the Apple TV.

If you make Plex behave differently, then she doesn’t know how to use it at all. She doesn’t bop between Plex on different platforms and complain that it looks different.

If Plex has an internal goal of consistency between platforms I hope that can be removed as a metric.

Please target goodness on each platform instead.

Has anyone found a good way to Navigate from Library to Library in the Experience Preview
Example: Movies Library, Looking at All Movies say your scrolling/ Browsing through this Library and your at movies starting with X. How do you navigate to another library without scrolling to the top again. Yes Backresults in Highlighting Library but Favourites will not appear unless at the top.

Double Back returns to Home, if you return to Movies same problem.

Another, how can you make a Library default to Browse

I quit running the preview last night as the stuttering video playback was annoying. Seemed like it wasn’t handling 24p properly. Old player plays back the same video perfectly.

Subtitles are a few seconds out of sync, tested against the Apple store version of plex

Totally agree RE top navigation, it just doesn’t work
