Current Missing Features & Bugs with the AppleTV App Experience Preview

Some feedback one are we going to get the alphabet scroll feature back at some point? Why remove something folks use all the time.

Second, when can we expect Dolby Vision to work in the Experience Preview?

Can we add to the list that the “stretch” view mode is just the old “zoom” which cases content to be cut off on the top and bottom?

Also, if you select an episode from the “Continue Watching” section it takes you to a page for that specific episode, not a listing of all episodes in that season/series and there’s no easy way to go to that listing.

If you long press on the episode in Continue Watching, you’ll have the option to go to the Season or the the Show pages where you can see the list of episodes.

There’s been some changes to display modes in the TestFlight beta that was pushed today.

Here’s how Plex currently intends the display modes to work:
Letterbox: Scale video to letterbox with black bars where necessary
Original: The exact source dimensions of the media
Stretch: Fill the entire screen ignoring aspect ratio
Zoom: Fill the entire screen respecting aspect ratio

Sure, but IMO the behavior should be reversed. Or at least configurable.

I only see 2025.19 as the latest, where “stretch” was just exhibiting the behavior of “Zoom”. If they’ve fixed it in an updated build, that’s great. It’d be one item to check off on my list of issues keeping me from switching to the new client.

Got back into the beta gain and noticed an issue with the latest version:

when you are playing back something and go into playback options → display mode = if you change it from letterbox to ‘original’ then the image is the size of a postage stamp, same issue on ios.

In the same vein, if you go into the playback options → then press the back button to get rid of the menu, it quits playback instead of closing the menu.

Anyone also noticed that when you finish an episode if you let it play the next episode then the audio is wildly out of sync with the video? i have to quit playback and then restart playback from the main screen again to fix the audio sync issue.

Some dolby vision files when playing fallback to HDR10 but at what i think is a highly elevated brightness level than what you get when playing via infuse and have dolby vision active, they sometimes look almost washed out?

Also just raising again that background images dont work for me at all on my local server content, but do on the discover content, it does however work on the ios build.

I believe Display mode was rectified in 2025.20.0 Testflight Release

Seems the “stretch” mode is still the same as “zoom” and the skip intro button still requires bringing up the OSD controls and scrolling over to it.

2025.22.0 Testflight release.

With a TV programme or movie recorded via the DVR, I cannot control playback beyond play/pause. Trying to skip forward has no effect. I can access the timer bar, but can’t affect it in anyway - no skip forward or back. Can’t drag it forward either.

Doesn’t happen with movies or TV programmes uploaded in the usual way. Only to recorded content.

Updated to the newest version. I appreciate the updates but this is getting ridiculous, the app is still completely unusable.

Navigation got a little faster and I can finally start playback pressing the play button, so that’s good, but:

  • Subtitle styling is still broken, see: Subtitles styling is broken when changing OS subtitles style
  • The player is still awful. Unintuitive OSD layout, too many clicks to navigate it and inconsistent position for the highlighted element. NO PREVIEW THUMBNAILS.
For the love of everything that you consider holy, JUST USE THE NATIVE ATV PLAYER AND CUSTOMIZE IT TO YOUR (and our) NEEDS. It’s fast and intuitive, supports every codec, every subtitle… why… why…?

Plus everything I’ve already said previously. But this two points are what makes it truly and completely UNUSABLE in this state, at least for me.

I agree that the updates are addressing/adding multiple things and are coming somewhat quickly. This is great to see!

#1 Issue: LiveTV audio is atrocious. (always 2-3 second delay) Using CableCard/HDHomerun Tuner
It makes using the app impossible. This issue was resolved in the last good version of the old app beta. What happened? I am using Stereo-paired HomePods(not mini)

I have also found quite a few navigational nuances that still exist, specifically pertaining to the use of the back button taking you to completely to a different screen, or closing the app altogether.

LiveTV Section:

  1. Upon navigating to section and pressing down, focus immediately transfers to the channel ID, versus. the actual show. this causes an additional navigation step to select a show.
  2. When pressing back from an active show and returning to the guide, there is no way to go back to the active(background) show. Old app had the ability to press back and select the background video.
  3. Pressing back from the LiveTV closes the app. the default behavior should be to go back to the ‘Home’ screen.
  4. Long Pressing on a show does nothing but tune to the channel. It should bring up the Title,Description, and Watch/Record options

General Navigation:

  1. When selecting the ‘settings’ while watching media, sometimes(often) it crashes the video player and keeps the side panel active until hitting ‘back’ to get to the library/Home Screen.
  2. As previously mentioned, pressing back from this menu quits media playback.. should close side menu.
  3. No immediate way of telling the audio/video quality of the current playing media. this was in the ‘Media Info’ screen and showed quality / transcoding, etc.
  4. The ‘active’ focus on the media description needs to have a buffer area and some rounded corners or something. Currently, it looks like it’s been highlighted by selecting text.

I agree 100%.

That said, I am afraid they will never use the native player again because it is too “weird” to them. I have said it before, but there is a very deeply rooted anti-Apple vibe amongst the devs that they won’t admit to, and it always feels like they begrudgingly have to dev for the Apple TV.

Every once in a while you get a glimpse of what I am referring to, emphasis mine.

Roku lovers rejoice I guess?

What frustrates me is that on any device, an app that plays video should be using the stock player for that device! That way from a user experience standpoint, if they’re watching Netflix, Amazon Video, Plex, etc. the UI is consistent.

I could care less that the player is different on Roku vs. Apple TV vs. Fire TV as I have standardized on one platform. Most users aren’t switching back and forth between different devices!

That’s 100% correct.

Most users are switching back and forth between different apps in the same device.

Sadly not

Pinch to zoom works for me on Ipad pro

Is that what your referring.

There still a reported ‘Original’ issue of being very small if i remember correctly. Yet if you pinch for Zoom. Full screen is enabled.

ATV there is no zoom at present, would expect it on 2025.23

I never use my iPad to watch media.

On the Apple TV with pretty much all 1080p or lower resolution. Hit start set “display mode” to “Original.”

The only difference I see with the guy who mentioned it is it sure as hell isn’t anything as big as a postage stamp. It’s basically a tiny white dot in the middle of the screen. So definitely not more than a few pixels.

With most 4K set to original again then maybe it’s the size of a few postage stamps.

I’m probably being dumb, but isn’t the desired setting supposed to be “original” then it should switch automatically according to what’s being played?

I use zoom for everything, except letterbox now, agree about original. USELESS

A point though, Zoom does not work on 4K stuff  . Thats if you want to use.

Cheers buddy

Is this thread still being tracked? ATV Testflight 2025.22

• Continue watching does not update.

Steps to reproduce: Watch a show, hit back till you get to the home screen, if I just watched S1E7 of a show, it will still display that show till I go to the library tab, and then back to home, then will update to S1E8.

• Skip Credits popx up at the end of a show, bug when I click it, it disappears not skipping the credits, and you have to arrow down and then arrow over to click it again.

• At the end of a show if you clicked back, and had a countdown timer set till next episode, it would bring the next episode choice up while still playing, now it just brings you back to the episode splash screen.

Let me know if you need logs or want a screen recording of what I’m saying.

New tvOS beta… still cannot use LiveTV… @Craig_Holliday, could you comment on the ‘fixes’ that were included in the last old player ‘testflight’ and whether or not they have been included in the new app? LiveTV audio is terribly offset( 1-3 seconds). It seems as if the fixes for HomePods used as audio(stereo-paired) either have a major regression or were not included. Thanks!

Still can’t control anything recorded via the DVR. Can only play/pause or stop.

Makes playback of recorded TV effectively useless if you can’t skip forward or back.

Can someone from Plex confirm that they’re also seeing this bug?
