Custom TV Drama title got overwritten by default when adding new episode

I have TV dramas that Plex don’t have meta data for and I assign custom names to each episode, for example “001 - Opening”. However, whenever I add new episodes to the folder and trigger a scan in Plex to read the new episode, many of the existing episodes names will get reverted back to the default name (e.g. “Episode 1”) in display (and the actual name in edit settings is wiped out with blank). Is there any settings in Library settings that will let me keep the existing custom titles when adding episodes to the folder? This has been very annoying as some dramas have 100+ episodes and I have to re-update all the names when adding just one new episode. Any help to resolve or work around this issue is much appreciated!!!

Are you locking the title field of the episodes when you change them? I thought it happened by default when you edit any field, but make SURE that the lock icon is and stays orange after you edit the field. The Title Sort field will automatically update and lock as well once you close this dialog box, so you shouldn’t have to edit that.

If you do have it locked, and it STILL resets to default after a library scan, then that is interesting behavior. Hmmm. I’m gonna test that right now.

Ok, some thoughts. I used a folder with some misc files. a few shows I’m not quite sure I want to keep were detected just fine. However:

A folder with a collection of movies by a certain actor, numbered by release date, was detected as a series. It failed to match, which is what you have. I went in and started modifying the “Title” field of an episode. I noticed that by default it does lock the field when you start typing in it. The “Sort title” field does update after closing and re-examining the data, but it does not lock the field. This may allow the title sort to change on its own when the title changes, so this is probably good. The only time you want to lock the “sort title” field is likely when you put in a custom sort, such as prefixing it with a “_” or “0” to sort first in a list.

I’ve scanned multiple times. The title fields that were locked remained locked, keeping their custom titles. I added a few more files to this folder, and rescanned. There was no change in the metadata where their field was locked.

I did notice a bug though: If you PASTE in the contents of the metadata/description fields, Plex does not detect that it was modified, and does not automatically toggle the lock. I had to type in ANY character (and remove it) for Plex to notice I changed the field, and toggle the lock. So if you are pasting the details of this show in from a document somewhere, either manually lock the field after pasting, or press spacebar then backspace to get plex to lock it for you.

You nailed it!!! Locking the Title field does prevent it from being changed by the app after re-scan. Thank you so much for the quick tip!!!

In my case, the Title field comes up as unlocked by default. I think it may have to do with the app that I’m using (Plex Media Player on Windows 8.1).

I notice that bug also in Title and Sort fields as well. The paste would work sometimes, but other times I need to add some character for the app to accept the text string. Again it might have to do with the app I’m using.

Ahh, I tested it on the web interface. I use that exclusively for admin tasks, while I log into my own “Managed User” sub-account for myself on my Plex Media Player app.
