Why is my Plex server appearing to show OTA recordings are being made when these are not actively being recorded? It seems to be getting stuck.

I am currently using the Plex for Windows app on my PC. When I look at the “activity” indicator in the top right, it is spinning away. When I click it it says it is recording a show. But the show was actually hours or even days ago. For example, yesterday I scheduled a recording of a WNBA game. Today, the activity indicator still says it is recording the game when obviously it is not.

In my TV Shows library, I only see one WNBA game recording file. And it’s not this one. It’s an older game.

When I go to the DVR Schedule listing, I see the game listed under the recordings in the column “Yesterday”. But it shows it is stuck at 99% Complete. Which might explain why it is not in TV Shows library yet. (I would post screenshots if I could.)

I rebooted the Shield and now the “activity” has stopped. However, now the game no longer appears under “Yesterday” in the DVR Schedule listing. It’s vanished.

I only use Plex for OTA DVR (for now). This has happened off and on for months. Please let me know if I can provide more information.

No solution I’m afraid, but you’re not the only one; I had the same issue when trying to record a Live Aid show in the UK a few weeks ago. A reboot cleared the issue, but like you, there was no recording to be found. Thankfully there was a repeat airing the following week that recorded without issue.

Edited to add that my server is on Windows PC and not Shield.

My experience with this type of issue is that it generally caused by a couple of things:

  • The recording “hangs” in post-processing. For example, Plex failing to move the file from the .grab folder to its final destination for some reason. Anything which might cause the completion not to be triggered.
  • If you have the option to convert (transcode) the video while recording enabled.

I’ve primarily seen these conditions cause failures in conjunction with signal quality issues, which can wreak havoc on transcodes and post-processing. (I used to use real-time conversion to H.264 and would see this occasionally on stations with marginal signal. In. my case the solution was to turn off real-time conversion.)

If you have complete server logs (Debug enabled, Verbose disabled) covering the timeframe from when the initial recording started to when you rebooted your Shield, they may provide more clues. If not, you could try to grab them if this occurs again.

Here are the settings I currently use. Should I change any of these? The problem is not frequent, but I have encountered it a few times in recent memory.

If I encounter it again I’ll attach a log.

Those look fine as far as I can tell.

The setting I was referring to above (Convert Video While Recording) is located Live TV & DVR device settings:

Settings → [Select Server Name] → Live TV & DVR → Gear next to your listings.

If it’s on, try setting it to off.

Mine is off and always has been.

Thanks.
