How does one watch DVR recordings as they're being recorded?

Hi,

I just got a HDHomerun Connect and I configured it on my plex server. I scheduled a live sports event and was hoping to watch it, but it’s still recording. I expected that the show would appear in my TV Shows library as soon as the recording started but it’s not there. Am I expecting too much? This is still currently recording, so I’m now expecting it to only show up in the library once it’s done.

Another post suggested that I could pull up the live event in the guide and rewind, but this only allows rewinding into the buffer it’s made since changing channels.

Is there simply no way to watch OTA DVR recordings in plex until they’re done?

Thanks

What client are you using? For some (most?) you can just go back to the live TV guide and select the program. It will ask you you want to start from the beginning or live. However, I believe that the Android-based clients are having an issue with this functionality currently (live playback while recording).

So far I’ve only used the Roku client on my TV, but I just tried a browser (chrome on Linux), and it’s the same.

The point is, there is nothing under TV Shows for this recording, yet the guide shows it as currently recording. The directory on the server where the library exists only contains the shows that were already there from before.

To be clear, the settings in Plex have OTA recordings supposedly going into my “TV Shows” library, which exists and has content, yet there is nothing there right now. Also, this is my very first recording, so I also don’t know what to expect.

Thanks

All clients are broken except Nvidia Shield.

1.5 year old thread here.

What specifically is broken? From what I can tell so far, this is a server issue, as in, the show is not being placed into the library while recording. Should I not expect to see a new file in the directory I’ve assigned to this library when DVR recordings start?

Just to be clear, I’m suggesting you go back to the Live TV & DVR section in your Plex app and navigate to the currently recording program. Select it like you normally would, as if you wanted to play it live. The only difference is that now it should ask if you want to start from the beginning or live.

You will not see a recording in your TV library until after the recording has completed. Nor will you see the file in the recording directory until it has completed and been post-processed.

And, as @jkramer mentions, there are some issues with the time-shifting functionality.

Shows are never put in the library until after the recording is complete.

As already stated intended behavior to use the guide to view an in progress video.

Selecting the item from the guide immediately takes me to the live stream and provides no other options, in both Roku and browser. The guide item shows the recording icon:

Thoughts?

That’s probably related to the problems mentioned in the other thread and, unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be a ready solution for it currently. I know the exact behavior varies by client, but in many cases there are problems with:

  • Starting an in-progress recording from the beginning
  • Fast-forwarding and rewinding while watching

It’s supposed to work how I described. And indeed some folks have reported it working for them. I myself have very few issues on my Apple TV 4K.

I’m not sure if it will help anything, but you may want to mention your experiences in the thread above. More evidence of issues may help in having the problems addressed.

Thanks, I just tried on android and the experience was the same. I’ll add some comments to that thread once I read up some more. Might be a while, as that thread is huge!

Seems to work for me in plex web + chrome on iPad.

It works on shield (I did it earlier).

I’ll try roku later.

I hate to admit this, but it turned out be a file system permissions issue on the server. I’m running it in docker using bind mounts and the container runs as my user, but the save location wasn’t writable. All is working as expected once the perms were fixed.

Sorry!

Just confirmed roku works, started watching beginning of in progress video.

That’s about all that happens correctly on Roku. If you try to rewind or FF it’s game over, at least with Win10 as the server. Pausing to take a leak will ruin your day too.
