Database migration from Nvidia Shield Pro to NAS - possible?

Server Version#: 1.24.4.5081
Player Version#: 8.24.0.28408

Hi,

I want to migrate my Plex server from Nvidia Shield Pro to my NAS. I’ve read all documentation regarding this topic and started the migration process. But the result is not good: Plex server on my NAS has not recognized the data from Shield database files.

All of the artists or albums information I have added manually to the Shield’s database is missing /not recognized/. I have more than 2000 albums, it could be difficult and time consuming to add the missing data manually again. For movies and tv shows the situation is the same, but I have less than 100 movies and tv shows in my collection. So I could do it again manually.

+information:
All media files are stored on my NAS. The NAS media libraries are mounted to SHIELD. The Shield’s Plex server database is external.

How can I migrate the dabase? Or is it possible at all?

Thanks.

Should be relatively straightforward. Exact procedure might slightly vary depending on what NAS you’re using.

Basic steps:

  1. identify the server data directory and config files on your source and target systems
  2. stop the server
  3. copy the files from source to location
  4. review/apply permissions on the target
  5. start the target server

Thanks for the reply.
I have already done all steps you wrote in exact order. No success.
My NAS is Asustor AS6604T.

Did you also find/transfer the preferences.xml?
Sometimes it can be helpful to create a new server on the NAS – just to ensure all the target folders/data is initiated – and then to copy the source files into their location.

Target directory for the server data directory on an Asustor NAS should be /volume1/Plex/Library

I have started the process with new Plex server installation on my NAS. Yes, I did it. And Metadata + Media folders as well.
My concern is NAS cannot translate external path (mounted storage on Shield) into internal path (NAS own folders) for the media libraries.

Yes. It won’t do that. Particularly not with music.
Your only chance is this: [HowTo] Plex database modification - Moving media the right/wrong way - #10 by jelwell

Thank you.

The process should be:

  1. copy all relevant files/folders from Shield database to somewhere
  2. modify the file location information according to NAS internal way in the database files
  3. copy the modified and other relevant files/folders into the Plex server directory on NAS
  4. start Plex server on NAS
  5. happy?

Still the chances of the procedure being successful are not great.
The differences in architecture between Android and Linux are quite big.

I was able to do this just fine and posted about it in a QNAP thread.

Ugyes outlined it above and thats pretty much it. I had to open up the database and do a SQL query to update the paths and then after starting the server, had to do a refresh of the database to bring in the coverart from the metadata files. This is not just scanning for new coverart due to I have a lot of unique stuff that requires me to find the cover art but it all came in after the scan.

I moved from the Shield to the QNAP to do the sonic stuff and then 45 days later after doing the full scan of 26K albums… I am finally done. Everything is working as it should and I had no problems after doing all that.

Here is my post about that: My Post

I just finished the database moving. Everything is fine except the cover arts for music libraries (and small parts of children tv shows). The rescan is done but no update for cover arts.
Maybe it could be another issue because Plex on NAS does not recognize the cover arts of new (recently uploaded) albums as well.

Yea, that seems really weird that you can’t rescan an new item and have it bring in new stuff. Like I said, once I did the scan, everything came back in. I will continue to think about this as it was 3 months ago or so and see if I can remember anything.

It’s almost ready now. The solution was: update all metadata for all libraries.
Only one strange thing left: I have a separate library for children music and tales, Plex on NAS does not recognize album arts for new albums from the files tags (it’s working on Plex on Shield), however, it does for normal music albums.

I guess I should have make that more clear when I said to scan the library. Where everything came over from the old database, I would check your library and agent settings… maybe something is different there where its somehow not picking up the info from the file tags. Maybe someone else has some thoughts on this.

Glad to hear you are up and running tho!
