Database migration with multiple drives

Hey - so maybe a dumb question. I have multiple drives in my computer.

I had my Plex database on a secondary drive.

I had to format my main which knocked out everything on there.

I have since reinstalled Plex on my main drive (and it has made a new database in C:\Users<username>\AppData\Local.

I did not have the opportunity to read this article prior to formatting - https://support.plex.tv/articles/201370363-move-an-install-to-another-system/

And because of that, I did not back up those registry key(s).

How would I restore my old database? Should I just copy D:/Plex over to the new location above? Should I point the newly-installed instance of Plex at the old database? Is there a benefit or any detriment of doing it one way over another?

Any and all feedback is appreciated. Thanks for your assistance!

Prerequisite: You need to make sure that your media files are available under the same drive letters/ folder names/ network addresses as they were on the old Windows installation.

^^ I assume this is the location where you have your old server data stored?
Does it have a folder named Plex Media Server in there?
If it does, all you’ll have to do is to

  • open the web app
  • Settings - Server - General - ‘Show Advanced’
  • put D:/Plex into “The path where local application data is stored”
  • “Save”
  • close the web app
  • quit Plex server using the tray icon
  • wait a few seconds
  • restart Plex server using its start menu icon

Thanks @OttoKerner,

Yes, the media files are in the same location as they previously were.

Yes, D:\Plex does have a Plex Media Server folder in there, with a dozen or so sub-folders in that.

I’ll try the steps mentioned and advise of the outcome, just wanted to make sure the Plex software wasn’t going to read this as a “new” location and try to overwrite the database I want it to use.

Thanks!

Can confirm, this worked as intended. Thanks again for your assistance @OttoKerner.

Thanks!
