Debugging setup failures

Having the same problem as a number of people above with the installation. I'd like to upload my logs but neither the basic nor the advanced uploader are able to complete the upload and i don't feel like opening a dropbox account. How can I send you the log files? Why should it be so difficult to attach 2 small files to this message? Thanks for any help.

@JGaryJ - Did you try out Plex even though you got the cursed error message? I had the same problem and after scratching my head withthe same challenges as you (although I did have a dropbox account), I just tried it out on my Roku box - and lo and behold it worked. So I suggest trying it out and see.

@navelgazer - Thanks for the tip. I'm checking out my photos on the tv through the roku...it seems to be working pretty well in spite of the error message. Hopefully everything's right. Time will tell. Thanks again.

yeah same here, gave some error that it wasnt working, but lo and behold i added a folder and then videos to it, and can now access it from my roku 2 player. pretty nifty id say. but it does come up with an error initally and i would first add and folder and video, and see if it works before posting any log files.

i think some else here said the same thing " see things out and tryit first"

i feel like a nerd and this thing is free??? wow this is like my own little netflix server. is there a way to queue up links only???? i dont want to download videos all the time. i just want to serve up links and start playing it on the roku player. there has to be a way,?!?!

Just so I'm clear, this error is displayed during setup? If so, can you follow the troubleshooting steps in the initial post on this thread?

Found the error, had failed to install newest version of Flash.

Uninstalled and reinstalled Plex without problems.

Just so I'm clear, this error is displayed during setup? If so, can you follow the troubleshooting steps in the initial post on this thread?

Think its when one tries to setup their first section so its displayed in plex/web.

I vaguely remember getting this error when migrating from OSX to Windows 7 and literally nothing was affected by this, all 100% functional. I had thought it was the migration which caused the issue but i have read a few people with this issue.

Installer packages built with the latest versions of WiX do require an updated version of Windows Installer. Unfortunately, Microsoft decided to not provide that to XP users as an automatic update. mudycj's link above should work.

I apologize for the hassle on XP, but this is not our fault. It's a 12-year old operating system and it's falling out of mainstream support from it's manufacturer.

Yeah, this is complex. Why did this installer require newer version of MSI? :(

I think I will have to wait to run a Plex server. I never had this problem with other software installers. :(

You might want to get comfortable with it. With Microsoft throwing in the towel on XP, you will be finding a lot of things difficult to install. And it should not come as a surprise, since it was announced about a decade ago. In fact, they extended the end-of-days for XP five years ago when the party was supposed to end.

I wanted to give a try at PMS.
First I had major problems downloading the setup file: many disconnections broken the setup file, and I solved (perhaps?) only with a download manager.
By launching the setup, however, I had immediately an error, which log report below.
I think is a problem of the setup file: there is a mirror where I can find a correct one?

Surely if a download is getting a lot of interruptions that must tell you that you do not have a good and reliable internet connection. Fix that first and then look into running apps like PMS. Normally the error you get is associated with a corrupt setup file.

Translating the version numbers in the log shows you are installing on windows 8. There have been other install errors on windows 8 reported by users and the related to windows 8 firewall being required plus other issues - expected to be fixed in windows 8.1. You can search the plex forums using google for plex and windows 8 install or setup errors.

I've got no problem with my internet connection: is not at the top for speed, but normally is stable and without problem.

My impression is that the server where the PMS setup file is on is very busy, not?

Can someone post the setup file on another site?

Hope you have your problems resolved. I have never had any download issues with PMS download site and I have not come across anyone else saying there is a problem since I started on plex 2 months ago.

cnet appear to host it but probably have to wait a while before 0.9.8.5 gets there.

may be someone else can offer you better advice

The file is 60 Mb in size - which is nothing when using an ISP offering fibre / cable broadband. But I am lucky I suppose to live in an area where that is available

Not sure if I'm posting this to the right place as It's my first post

I have plex server running on my DS412+

I have numerous mobile devices connected to it no problem and running fine with android and iOS

I have a couple of playout device including a Roku 2XS, Sony SNMP200 and an android cyclone device running no problem

I have also installed the plex player on my laptop and it runs with no problem

I have also build 2 identical machines and I had no problem with the install on these win7 64bit ultimate machines

My problem comes with only 1 of the identical machine that will run the app and allow me to use it no problem

however when it comes to playing any video it crashes out with an error message

I have tried everything I can thing of

No real errors in the event logs

No difference in the setups on either machine

No difference in the hardware other than an upgraded graphics card in the one that works
