Debugging setup failures

I'm trying to upgrade to the latest version of the media server. I tried doing the update from within the server and it says I have the latest version, although I do not. So I tried to download the new version and installed and I get 0x80004005 - unspecified error. The log says:

Any ideas?

This has been reported before several times and i think each time was found to be due to corrupt download file. Delete all download files and get the PMS software from http://plexapp.com/dekstop

Have a look at this thread which is similar to your fail http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/77859-could-not-install-pms-error0x80004005/?p=446352

That worked, thanks!

Hi guys, I'm on Windows 8.1 and I'm getting the following error logs.  Upon installation.  I thought something might be up with .NET so I ran a SFC Scan and had no luck.  I have no idea why this is happening.  I attempted to install a different MSI and had no issues.  Also, I downloaded it multiple times and tried...same error.  Has anyone seen this?

Just put that error code in google search with prefix site:forums.plexapp.com and got this hit

http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/74359-plex-media-server-0980282-b32b611-en-usexe-installation-error/

Have a look. I think for windows 8 it is necessary to have the windows firewall enabled

Noticed you are installing PMS 0.9.8.6

The current general release is 0.9.8.10 - see http://plexapp.com/desktop

Thanks! My norton 360 turned off my firewall.  I just started the service and tried the installer and it worked.  Thanks!

Ok, I have windows 8.1 and installed plex media server and when I go to open it, it gives me this error:

The program can not start due to missing file. libcurl.dll

but the file is there....

what gives?

Could it be some security blocking access - anti virus? the new 'enable enhanced protected mode' that came in with IE11 and Windows 8.1? Symptoms would be different - but check if it is enabled and disable it - see https://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/86977-after-update-plex-wont-connect-to-the-web-client-my-ip%C2%AD32400%C2%ADweb/

Could also try deleting all download files for PMS and re downloading Plex Media Server 0.9.8.13 and disabling anti virus when running install and making sure install done with 'Run As Administrator' and checking install log file

If all this fails and still have the same issue, upload install log file (see first post in thread about install log file) and also Plex Media Server.log (there is pinned topic about location)

I am trying to install Plex-Media-Server-0.9.813.235-a263b7e-en-US.exe
I get Product: Plex Media Server -- Error 1406. Could not write value Plex Media Server to key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. System error . Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
I have the perfmon logs that show the locking.

I have tried creating another Admin user profile to install with (no luck).

I can edit the regkey as admin before and after aborting the install just not during.

Seems to work fine on 32 bit Windows machine I have.

Wondering if a Clean install is best, but how do I save the metadata/index so that I don't have Plex reindex all my movies and tv shows?

Old version: 0.9.7.22-4b5280f

I was told to try this so here is my Log..

You're not going to believe this but it worked.. I had to Uncheck "set to run on bootup" even though I had it not running when I start the install.. Thanks

Don't you love it when you throw the whole deck of cards up in the air, and you end up with just the aces left in your hand? :)

Note: georgexp is referring to this thread relating to the installer's inability to edit the run registry key...

mfeingol, we have been having a number of installs of PMS 0.9.8.14 go wrong having difficulty finding the msi for uninstalling then previous version.

There is one that now got into a mess demanding a CD to be loaded. Please could you have a look and advise on how to go forward and look into why these issues are arising

Thanks

Please see this thread. I will add the other thread when I find it

EDIT 3: This has now been resolved by the Microsoft Windows Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter available through this KB. See https://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/89453-problem-installing-new-update/?p=520586

Edit:

Another thread for windows server 2008 R2 here. User ran dependency walker after seeing an investigation by you of a similar error on PMC a couple of years ago - but it is showing loads of errors.

Edit 2:

Also we had this thread and this thread (but this may have been due to missing Service Packs)

I tried installing PMS on Windows Server 2012 R2. It installs fine but when the web page loads I get a page that says there is an error with a critical component of Plex.

This is my log file.

any Help would be  appreciated

Thanks

First it would be good if you edit your post and attach the log file using 'More Reply Options' and the browse/attach file facility and delete the pasted log file text. It just makes it that much easier when dealing with very big logs

With regards to the error message this does tend to happen and in most cases it is fixed by a combination of restarts and repairing the system and framework bundles as outlined in this pinned forum topic

Thanks Plex Star

testing...............

All I see is questions here.  Where are all the answers???  I'm getting the same message as others about a core component problem.  I hope these are the files required.  There were more but they won't fit here.  Plex is not off to a good start with me.

The answer was there in the linked pinned topic in post #54 above

Most of these errors are resolved by a combination of restarts and repair of the system and framework bundles as outlined in this pinned topic in this forum

Actually, Plex went through the motions of repairing itself.  Now if I could just find a tutorial on how to use the software.  Nothing happens when I click on the icon.

There is tons of stuff on the wiki http://wiki.plexapp.com/  - This is how we all started - from zero to where we are now. After the wiki then it would time to browse some bits of the forums that are relevant for what you want to do.

The basics for Plex is that you :

- Install a Plex Media Server,

- Create Media Library Sections,

- Add folder paths to the Library Sections,

- Do a scan of all the Sections.

- Verify it is all working by accessing through browser through the Media Manager interface

Then you look into how you are going to play your Plex Media Library contents and initially concentrate on getting it all working locally on your local network. So you look at accessing it through Plex Home Theater, Plex\Web, Plex for Samsung. buying a Roku and accessing the media through the Plex channel for Roku or RARflix Channel for Roku, Android Plex App via wifi, iOs Plex App for iPad for iPhone - again through wifi

Then when you are comfortable with all this and it is working fine, you start considering publishing your server for access through the internet and myPex authentication. This is when it starts to move into advanced topics - if it all works straightaway then it is not really advanced stuff - but for a lot of people it is complex because of need to have some open ports on the router - at this point the myPlex forum becomes the forum to browse through

Then when you get the Plex Media Server published for access through the internet and myPlex you can start using myPlex features eg sharing all or parts of your library with friends and family members. Using Queue facility. Looking at what PlexPASS subscription would give you and consider paying for it. You could do that early if you would be unhappy paying for a feature like Plex Android app or the Plex for Roku channel only to find later you could have had it free had you subscribed to PlexPASS upfront. The life membership price tag is a bargain and for me it is enough that I know i can get the new versions out immediately.

Nothing happens when I click on the icon.

So you click the Plex icon in the System Tray at the bottom of the screen and nothing happens? Do you not got options to choose from: Media Manager, Set auto start on login etc.. ?

Or is this a different icon? Have a look at the pinned topic in this forum relating to logs and get the Plex Media Server.log and upload it to a post in this forum. Raise a new separate thread as at the moment it is not possible to establish what the problem is so no relevant existing threads
