Debugging setup failures

Setting up new server from scratch all to be met with the same problem in the end. 

Is the error to do with updating Plex Media Server or Plex/Web check for updates?

Install Plex Media Server manually - download it from http://plex.tv/downloads

You can now go for Plex/PASS release 0.9.12.2 as you are plex pass user

So sign in to plex.tv and then select downloads and select PlexPASS downloads

Check the download file (right click on it and select properties and make sure you see a Digital Signatures tab with entry for Plex Inc)

As you have a lot of trials and errors best to start with clean slate now

So shut down Plex Media Server

Terminate any residual processes showing in Task Manager Processes view

Uninstall Plex Media Server through control panel / programs

Then delete all contents

%localappdata%\plex media server

Then with RegEdit Delete Registry area

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.

You have not said if you are on windows 7 or windows 8

If you are on windows 8 make sure the windows 8 firewall is active when running the install

Using an Admin Account

Install Plex Media Server 0.9.12.2

At the end of the install Launch and go through initial setup

I dont even know which screen you are referring to and what stage you reached in the setup and if you clicked Launch after setup and if you got a browser open and if you added your library or not ... I need a lot more detail and screenshots and log files as well - use more reply options to attach

You have something blocking access to websites and 443. 

Loads of errors. Is there a proxy ? Some non standard setup

No nothing that i am aware of. Any recommendations on how to go about trying to isolate the problem? I have been running this server on my desktop for about a year now and nothing has changed aside from me trying to do the update.

Was internet connection available to the server ?

Do you have any site filtering ?

What anti virus / firewall / security products do you have ?

When you go to Control Panel / All Control Panel Items / Internet Options / Connections tab 

do you have proxy enabled?

yes internet access was available and had been using remote viewing on and off LAN with no issues.

No Site filtering.

Use norton anti virus

no proxys enabled

Resolved!!! There was something in norton smartfirewall keeping it from workng. Disabled that and now everything is back up and running

What firewall? 

Is it Norton 360 Internet Security type of product or just anti virus

Something is blocking the connections

What ever firewall / anti virus / internet security products you have, can you look into adding program exceptions for:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\Plex Media Server.exe

C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\Plex Media Scanner.exe

C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\PlexDlnaServer.exe

C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\PlexNewTranscoder.exe

C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\PlexScriptHost.exe

C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\PlexTranscoder.exe

Once this is done - you can look into port rules and add Inbound Rules for the ports on this support page https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201543147-What-network-ports-do-I-need-to-allow-through-my-firewall-

The 'No Error' error text must be a clue !

Could you reboot the PC to see if it makes things better

Is user Wolfenstevens an Admin User Account?

If it is not, make sure it is and rerun

I tried the log thing from the command and experienced the same thing and no log file was generated.

Using Windows XP service pack 3 and I do have Avast antivirus on the machine.

I have checked the properties of the downloaded file and the digital signature is there so I don't think it's a corrupt file.

I am sorry but all support information relating to crashes is now for versions after XP as you can see here

It is probably crashing. The windows application event log will probably have some exceptions logged

You should really ditch XP. Without security patches available you will be at the mercy of hackers

Assuming you're on Windows, try deleting the following registry value, and then restarting PMS:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server -> FirstRun

do not see "FirstRun"

Suggest you download Plex Media Server afresh from plex.tv/downloads

Then check the download file: Right Click / Select Properties. And check that there is a 'Digital Signatures' tab and entry for Plex Inc

If neither, it is corrupt - delete and retry

When you know you have a good download, rerun the install to do a repair.

Make sure you are using an Admin account when running it

If problem persists, export the whole registry area for Plex to text file. Edit your email address and online token and upload the text file here

I downloaded Plex. Restarted my computer. Clicked on the Start button in Windows 7 chose Plex Media Server and nothing happened. This is how it should work. I am not a computer professional, and I shouldn't have to mess around with settings to get a piece of software to work. But as Windows 10 is going to take away WMC I have to find something else. So how do I get it to work?
