Debugging setup failures

Just tried to install the latest version of Plex and it is failing. Keeps telling me the install failed. tried downloading it directly from Plex.tv as well as within the Plex Manager and both ways fail.

Attached log from failed upgrade.

Can someone help identify issue with iinstaller.

I run the upgrade as the logged in user with Admin rights on my windows 2012 R2 VM running in hyper-V.

No log.....

Double check the downloaded file - right click / properties / look for Digital Signatures tab with Plex Inc entry

Do the install manually rather than through Media Manager

Checked installer file for digital cert. it is there.

Ran install again doing right click and run as administrator.

Still failing.

Log attached this time for real. forgot to hit Attach file button doh!

No

Use admin account to install - not a normal user with run as afministraror selected

So it shows in Task Manager as a process for Plex Media Server.exe ?

Does a Plex system tray icon appear at the bottom right side of the screen?

What happens when you open a browser and go to url

localhost:32400/web

Could you look for the log files

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server\Logs\Plex Media Server.log

and the install log file:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Temp\Plex Media Server_yyyymmddhhmmss.log

and upload both using 'More Reply Options' and Attach Files

The process shows up with that name, but the icon doesnt appear and none of the log files (or plex directories) exist.

When I run Plex-Media-Server-0.9.1116.958-80f1748-en-US.exe it starts the process but stays at about 200 bytes in memory and never grows and the program never properly starts (or ends). I looked at the troubleshooting tips in the first post, but they don't seem to help, like the /log option doesn't create a log when run on the command line, it just starts and exits.

I recently upgraded to a new motherboard and had to do a full reinstall of Windows, before that I had a working install of PMS.

can you check the download as being complete - right click on the download file Plex-Media-Server-0.9.1116.958-80f1748-en-US.exe

Select Properties

See if there is a Digital Signatures tab and within it an entry for Plex inc

The absence of either indicative of incomplete download file

Sorry. I should've said upffront, I sidid check for the certificate and installed it, but that didn't change anything.

Strange...

So it is the setup / install that is not running - and you say the process for installing the file Plex-Media-Server-0.9.1116.958-80f1748-en-US.exe does not get more tham 200 bytes in memory

Could you get me screenshots and upload here:

- Screenshot of file properties screen for Plex-Media-Server-0.9.1116.958-80f1748-en-US.exe

- Screenshot of Task Manager Porcesses View sorted alphabetically and showing all processes starting with Plex......

- Export of RegEdit of the following area:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.

- You should export to text and edit the text file - changing your email address, PlexOnlineToken before uploading

Use 'More Reply Options' button to attach the files

Looked at the log and it is the common error

Error 0x80070643: Failed to install MSI package

You can try to see if the steps in the last section of this support page resolve the issue:  https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/202967086-Errors-trying-to-upgrade-install-or-uninstall-Plex-Media-Server-on-Windows

Would prefer if you ran the install in an account that is in the Administrators group without need for elevation

With windows 8 and may be 2012 server is similar, we had install failures when the windows firewall was not active. So try with it enabled

If still fails, you can upload the 2 msi log files - there is one more detailed (and much bigger) than the one you uploaded

The files are :

C:\Users\svc_plex\AppData\Local\Temp\Plex Media Server_201503ddhhmmss.log

C:\Users\svc_plex\AppData\Local\Temp\Plex Media Server_201503ddhhmmss_0_pms.log

If too big for forum, you can upload elsewhere (eg dropbox) and share link

Unfortunately I'll have to put debugging this on hold.

I rebooted and after that the installer started and brought up the first page, but when the progress bar came up it didn't progress at all.

I rebooted again and things went really bad, it didn't boot anymore and wouldn't recognise a keyboard (I tried 3) so I couldn't even press DEL to get into BIOS.

So until I fix that Plex is the least of my problems!

Thanks for your help though, I'll get back to you after I sort this out...

Thanks for feedback - sounds like you have bios / hardware issues

New user:  I have Windows 7, I'm getting the message: "A problem has been detected with a core component of Plex Media Server." When I first open the 'Get Started' page.  Also, when I 'hit' the Home Icon, then select '+' to add libraries, I immediately get "There was an error adding this library".  I've attempted to reset the system and framework bundles to no avail.  Also, I've removed the program, re-downloaded the MS and re-attempted the install without my security software enabled (Webroot).

Thanks for the assistance.

You are in the wrong forum topic as this topic is about install errors.

Anyway, you have some third party application or malware installed that is giving crashes within mswsock.dll within the Plex Media Server.exe process - one of many such programs as you can see from the long list in my signature.

Search for dll  BDL.dll on your C:\ Drive and find out which program it is part of and remove that program.

Some of these programs have been found to be difficult to get rid off so you may need to search the internet for how to remove.

Also with some you may find your network or internet access stops working after removal and may need to reset the windows tcp stack and again search the net on how to do that. This is mentioned in some forum posts for similar crashes

The latest update ruined my Plex but I was able to fix it this way.  It might help someone else experiencing similar issues.

Checked user account and it is In Administrators group.

Checked Windows Firewall service and it was disabled. I enabled it and started firewall. then attempted Install again and success.

thanks.

You must have searched the forums to have found this thread. Did you try any of the suggested answers for the many previously reported cases of this error being returned?

Since it is windows 8 the first suggestion is make sure the windows 8 firewall is active before you start the install

Thanks here as well. Worked like a charm.

Hello, Everyone. New to the message boards so please forgive any mistakes.

2 Days ago i tried updating to my plex server to Version 0.9.12.1.1079-b655370. Only to be met with a yellow ! that tells me something went wrong and to install manually.

I have tried reinstalling, repairing, unintaling and reinstalling, updated .net frameworks, rolling back to previous version, Setting up new server from scratch all to be met with the same problem in the end. If someone could offer assistance I would greatly appreciate it.
