Debugging setup failures

I didn’t get a chance to look for the patch before I deleted the VM. I was about to have a mutiny with my family since Plex had been down for several days. I will take a snapshot of my VM tomorrow and try to upgrade again and let you know the results hopefully it will go smooth as in the past.

Hello there. I tried to install Plex for the first time on my Windows 7 laptop but I couldn’t. I freed up over 10GB of space on my hard drive but still get the error that I don’t have enough disk space to install (plus when I choose Cancel instead of Retry, the dialog box only returns, saying I don’t have enough disk space). It shouldn’t need that much space, right?

Screenshots ? Log files ?

Okay, here’s a screenshot anyway. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks.
Any log files written to at the time within this folder %LocalAppData%\Temp
It is where you have the Temp folder

Could it Permissions to C:\ProgramData ?
Are you running the setup using an administrator account?

The install should only occupy about 200Mb.
When you freed up space - did you free it up in Recycle Bin?

Yes and yes. :\

I did the upgrade last night and all went well so I am guessing it had something to do with the OS that was causing that update to fail. Thanks for all the support.

That is good news

Do you know what you did in terms of windows server 2012 R2 updates / other changes to make the Plex Media Server upgrade work?

The disk full error actually usually comes up soon after I reboot the laptop. Here’s the error that comes up otherwise. :stuck_out_tongue:

log file: plexerror2 - Pastebin.com

As it says this is suggesting another install has not completed - that is what Error 0x80070652 means

What windows version are you running on ? and can you check that it is upto date with Service Packs/Windows Updates.

With 0.9.15.2 the install needs VC++ 2015 Redistributable and this is dependent on being up to date with service packs and other KBs issued as part of Windows Update. Need to eliminate this

If problem persists after setup following a reboot, could you look for all log files relating to installs - have a look at folder
C:\Users\Admin\AppData\Local\Temp\ and pick group of files ending with .log file extension. The filenames start with Plex Media Server_ and for the VC++ 2015 - would have vcredist in the filename. Zip and attach

lol. I went to install VC++ 2015 Redistributable and I get the same error. Wow. Weird.

Anyway, here’s the Plex setup log files if they’ll help at all…

Thanks for all the msi log files

With respect to Error 0x80070652 ERROR_INSTALL_ALREADY_RUNNING there is some advice from Microsoft that a reboot may clear that

Concentrating on the initial error suggesting not enough diskspace - can see the error in this log
Plex Media Server_20160211213305_0_pms.log whilst installing 0.9.15.2
The errors are logged as

MSI (s) (C0:58) [21:49:34:233]: Product: Plex Media Server -- Error 1711. An error occurred while writing installation information to disk. Check to make sure enough disk space is available, and click Retry, or Cancel to end the install.

I notice prior to this an attempt was made to create a System Restore but failed after 10 minutes

Google Search for Error 1711. An error occurred while writing installation information to disk picked up this advice
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/error-code-1711-an-error-occurred-while-writing/4b653560-0f3b-4e64-88e6-97ed6c48c0c0
I suggest you follow the advice given there and see if it resolves the problem.
The advice being:

The issue is related to Windows Installer, I would suggest you to try the following steps:

Step 1 : Unregister and then reregister Windows Installer

  1. Unregister Windows Installer. To do this, click Start, type run, click Run, type msiexec /unregister in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Reregister Windows Installer. To do this, click Start, type run, click Run, type msiexec /regserver in the Open box, and then click OK.

Step 2 : Run System File Checker (SFC) scan to fix any corrupt system files. To do this, follow the steps mentioned in the link below:
How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

Hmm, I did Step 1 & 2 and the scan said there was no problems. Odd. :expressionless:

So the disk space error is still occurring ?

On that same web page i linked to (Windows 7 Programs / Error Code 1711 - An Error occurred whilst writing installation information to disk ), there is also a note from user who found that there 64K msi temp files in a directory - may be there is a limit) - see the last answer on that page. See how many msi*.tmp files are in the C:\Windows\Installer folder. There appears to be a limit of 64K files and that would seem to give the same error

This is an msi error - so it is not really a Plex Media Server issue but a windows issue

Do not delete any *.msi as they are needed for upgrades - so just remove tmp files and first establish how many files and with what filename extension are in that folder

Other possibility is that some anti virus / security software affecting access to the directories. What do you have installed ?

I deleted some of the tmp files and was finally able to install both. Phew. Thanks for the help.

How many were there?

What version of windows are you running on?
What version of Plex Media Server are you upgrading from to version 0.9.15.6 ?
Can you check the installer to see if compatibility setting got somehow added - (this was mentioned before in post from development for similar error). So check file properties for
C:\Users\Boohidiwick\Downloads\Plex-Media-Server-0.9.1506.1714-7be11e1-en-US.exe

Also check that you are up to date with windows service packs.
Similar error was resolved here with windows updates:

Hi I have recently reset my laptop to its original state and have reinstalled all of my movies. I have tried to re-download the Plex server and it says Plex setup failed. I have attached the problem log to this email.

Hi I have recently reset my laptop to its original state and have reinstalled all of my movies. I have tried to re-download the Plex server and it says Plex setup failed. I have attached the problem log to this email.

The log shows trying to install 0.9.15.2 and the following error is encountered

[1600:0CE4][2016-03-21T17:26:35]e000: Error 0x81f40001: Bundle condition evaluated to false: NOT ((VersionNT = v6.3) AND (KB2919355_x86 <> 112 AND KB2919355_amd64 <> 112))

The problem relates to the interdependencies that are needed to allow the Microsoft Visuall C++ 2015 Redistributable to be installed - needed for Plex Media Server versions 0.9.15.x onwards

First make sure windows is up to date with important and recommended patches - in windows update64-bi

Best probably is to try to install the Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable -x86 version separately - this is the download page:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=49984
The download that is needed for both 64-bit and 32-bit systems is the 32-bit version : VC_redist.x86.exe

Have a look at the extra dependency information under System Requirements

Once this is installed together with any missing dependencies, then download the latest Plex Media Server version from plex.tv/downloads and try to install again
