Dedicated port for 2nd server; Remote access failing after success

Server Version#: Windows, Latest
Player Version#: Samsung TV

Hello,

I have port 32500 successfully forwarded to the second server with a dedicated LAN IP. When I click ‘Retry’ it connects successfully. When I log in at plex.tv I see both servers, but I have not tested this from the WAN. The connection is not stable. Whenever I return to that machine I find the Remote Access has turned red.

My friend in Florida is using Plex on a Samsung TV, and she is getting streams from the 1st Linux server (Ubuntu 18.04) but not the 2nd Windows 7 server. The 2nd server has been shared, but is not visible to her.

(Yes, I have searched the forums already, and read the KB articles. I have done the setup correctly.)

TIA

check how the port forward is done for the 2nd server

Both servers must forward to 32400

So server 2 would be
WAN/Public Port 32500
Forwarded to LAN/Local port 32400 to the local IP of the 2nd server

(Some routers do not allow the WAN and LAN ports to be different in a port forward)

Thanks for the reply. My router indeed does not do that. It returns something like, that port is already in use. So, is there a workaround for this? LAN access is not broken. I can reach the server by LAN IP:32400 address. Would UPnP work?

I would recommend replacing the router with one that allows you to have a different port number for WAN and LAN in a port forward.

There are some advanced methods to overcome this and doing google search will find some - eg this https://stackoverflow.com/questions/11525703/port-forwarding-in-windows

But i do not know if there would be any issues

Thanks for the reply. I’ll have to do without a backup server. The Windows server struggles mightily with my music library anyway. The Linux server is fast and stable.

Have a good night!

(Having two servers with overlapping content sounds like a pain to me.)

It’s worth trying with UPnP. Sometimes a router’s GUI won’t let you create two mappings that use the same internal port, but UPnP can.

I think you would want to remove any manual mappings already on the router, so both can be created with UPnP.

As far as I can tell, Plex sends UPnP requests whether it’s configured to pick a port automatically or to use a specific one. I have a specific port configured in Plex, and am using UPnP successfully.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have had 32400 configured to server 1 for a long while now, and it’s working. It’s being used remotely so I’ll just leave it alone, rather than risk breaking it.

 Fair enough.
