My setup consists of Plex Media Server (1.9.0.4252-d07c1f408) being hosted on an i5 processor based Windows 10 system, an HDHomeRun Prime (no cable card being utilized, just pulling non DRM channels from over the coax line), and an Amazon Fire TV Gen 2.
I am having problems with interlacing/combing artifact when viewing channels that are broadcast in 1080i. According to this Lon.TV report the Amazon Fire TV supposedly deinterlaces content whereas the less powerfull Amazon Firestick does not. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNDtVgYwjec
I have the Amazon Fire TV but it does not appear to deinterlace content, it’s especially noticable with quick on screen movement. Can anyone help me resolve this issue?
I’m in the UK and all our HD freeview channels are 1080i so finding a client that can actually play them has become a real issue for me.
I’ve tried the Gen1 Fire Stick, Gen 2 Fire Stick and Gen 2 Fire TV, the Gen 2 Fire Stick has been the best for 1080i content but only using the HDHomerun app.
You can get the Gen 2 Fire TV to do forced deinterlacing in SPMC/Kodi by enabling MPEG2 acceleration to always and then selecting BOB deinterlacing in the video setting while watching the channel.
The Fire TV can do this but the fire sticks aren’t quick enough, even the Fire TV becomes quite laggy and tbh I wasn’t that impressed by the quality.
The Gen 2 Fire Stick looks ok using the HDHomerun app to view, can still see some lines but not too bad on most shows (can see it when a weather presenter starts moving their arms around for example). It doesn’t work well in Plex or SPMC using the HDHomerun addon. Live TV will breakup and freeze often and recordings won’t play without transcoding.
I don’t know why the HDHomerun app works and the other’s don’t but I’m tempted to just to buy their DVR subscription as I don’t want to waste power doing heavy transcoding or converting all my recordings. Don’t mind doing it for ones I want to keep long term but having to do it for everything just seems a waste.
