Delete poster

Yup, the Plex dance is the only way I’ve found to fix this, and many other issues.

I understand the difficulty of making it so you can delete the downloaded metadata, & it would take a much bigger change, but the ability to remove them, even if they are going to come back when metadata is refreshed, because an episode was added or whatnot, would still be useful. & a pop-up that says “This image was added by [Plex Movie] (or whatever metadata service) Metadata Agent & will be readded when metadata is refreshed are you sure you want to delete?” Then it’d just be a cosmetic addition instead of developing a whole system to find-mark-tag & exclude from a metadata refresh.
Alternatively, on the more complex changes side, it could be nice to have an option to lock in Metadata (like you can for every text field) & maybe a checkbox somewhere, maybe library settings, to limit the number of metadata pull pictures & have a [Keep] checkbox &/or a [Show Me More] button to see others.

It’d also be nice to have a [Show alternative show covers] as an option for seasons, which often have only a single season cover, that’s not in English, & the only way to get rid of is to go find an image, even if it’s just the same or a different show cover, & replace it. Would solve multiple problems

I really need this function, but I don’t seem to find it.

Plex sometimes arbitrarily on DIFFERENT platforms will default to a DIFFERENT poster than the one I choose as the one to be used. This is HORRIBLY annoying when that poster is a PLEX generated poster of an image from within the video itself. So, while I wouldn’t necessarily want NO poster, I do want to REMOVE unwanted posters.

Oof. That would be a lovely feature and a very useful one. I have uploaded too many posters that I don’t use anymore and take up space and I cannot delete them. 6 years feature request :frowning:

Six years later lol

Yup. Just another simple common sense request that’s never happening.

plex bloat fix this works by the way. It removes unused posters. pretty easy to set up.

Plex still hasn’t added the ability to just select and delete an unwanted poster(s)?
I can manually delete by inspection of the element (Safari), and then using find on my Plex Server to locate and delete, but why can’t Plex add this to the UI?

Because you can delete it sure, but when you refresh metadata it will come back. so it’s not as simple as you make it sound. Deleting it & having it come back will just leave more people mad & people will think it’s freeing up space, but in reality they are only doing that temporarily.

That is the same problem, though it will remove unused posters that you uploaded that you don’t want anymore.

I was referring to posters that I uploaded.
I should have mentioned that

I have a lot (I mean a LOT) of duplicate posters that PLEX includes when I re-fresh metadata. Could never find a solution, so I have learned to ignore them)

So for that case with posters personally added it’s a decent, though dangerous, workaround, but popular shows often have a ton, especially if, like me, you have the plugins for other poster sources for metadata, which I now realized probably aren’t even doing anything anymore…, but still, popular shows have a ton. To really have a delete Posters option there needs to be a way to have like a check box in the posters & background areas to “turn off poster fetching” or something like that, or an entry in the Database saying these ones have been downloaded before & not to download them, but that could be problematic because you might want them to, so you’d need a way to say so. That’d be nice, a button in the posters area to “search for posters” & have it not do that if there are more than like 5 already there, or let that be a user setting how many to “not fetch if”. There are lots of possibilities, & no matter what solution some won’t like it. lol

I said it before but my ideal would be for it to not download everything but to have a fetch button to show what’s online, & then have you click the ones you want to download.

The most efficient way would be for Plex in a Scheduled Task to look for and delete duplicate posters, but probably not worth the effort.

I don’t know why you think that’s the most efficient… That would only deal with duplicates, which while a problem for sure, usually aren’t duplicates as far as a machine is concerned, they are just visually detected as duplicates. So for Plex to automatically detect that it’d have to spend a lot of clock cycles guessing at what is & what isn’t, & there will definitely be times where things you don’t want to be deleted, especially when you have slightly different versions of the same art with the words alignment being slightly different. Those are important particularly for collections when you want them to match.

But then it’d go & re-download them when it refreshes metadata, then delete, the download, then delete… That’s the opposite of efficient

As you said, what we need is a delete option and then the ability to Lock the posters for that movie/show to prevent re-downloading.

There’s an idea, a lock button like every text field has, if it’s turned on you can delete stuff, if not you can’t. Then it won’t be fetching anything.

Not perfect, since if you want to update poster art you’ll have to untick it & then delete everything again, but at least for me, that’d be fine as once I lock it I would expect to be swapping between ones that are left. That’d also make it easier to sort multiple collection sets as if you keep 6 of each it’s easy to find the one you want instead of how it is now where I have to select a couple that are close to determine which one lines up with the set.

I don’t know why there are so many posters for one movie
Looked at 12 Monkeys (1st movie in my Library), and there are 55 posters!

…and 150 in 2001 a Space Odyssey! (many look to be dups)

Yeah, I like having options, in the old agent I added sources, but 150 is too much, I’ve seen 180 in one & I thought that was just just because I had extra sources, but since the new agent doesn’t use those that 150 is definitely just the way it is, lots of bloat

Yes, at minimum, we should be able to manually delete posters, banners, backgrounds, etc. from the Edit dialog. PLEX metadata matching has made a real mess of some things. I want to clean it up. Added my vote for this basic ability.

We really need the function to delete posters, because some self-built collections, I uploaded the poster, but may modify the version, the posters are very similar, more than one simply can not be distinguished, and can not remove the unwanted, very inconvenient.

Within the first hour of using the software, I ended up looking for a delete option. Maybe as someone who knows how small file size can add up over time and bloat a db, I just want to delete a background or poster for now, until a later time when I can search for a more suitable one, and if I don’t delete it (or change it) right now I’ll likely forget about it later because I have hundreds of thousands of files…? I always hate it when devs try to decide for you what should and shouldn’t be important to you, especially when it comes to really basic and expected features…
