Deleted file, deleted entry, emptied trash, yet movie still comes back after library scan

Setup: Shield TV(1st gen, no internal HD) running server, WD MyCloud NAS containing the library.

I went through and re-encoded a bunch of files to make them smaller, and after a bunch of deleting and moving and copying, I’ve got the server properly recognizing everything except one particular movie.

I manually deleted the original movie(Kids (1995).mp4) from the library using my file manager, rescanned the library, then copied the new version(Kids (1995).m4v) back to the library and then rescanned the library again. I noticed one particular movie was showing the little 2 files icon in the upper left, look at the info and I see both the original mp4 and the new m4v, but it says the mp4 is unavailable. I have the delete from the library option in the Plex settings turned on, so I delete the mp4, rescan and it comes back but still says unavailable, I delete again and empty trash, but after a rescan, it shows back up but still says unavailable. I even deleted the newer m4v so there is no original or newer file in the library and try again with every combination of deleting file and entry and emptying trash and rescanning within the server and the entry always comes back. Copy the newer m4v back into the library and rescan, and the entry once again shows the 2 files icon, but still showing the older mp4 as unavailable.

I realize that might be a bit confusing and all over the place, but I’m just at a loss for words as to how to fix it.

Server Version#: 1.18.4.2171 (smb)
Player Version#: 7.26.0.14578

If you click delete files in the get info window same thing? That should delete the file immediately and remove it from database

Tried, still comes back.

can we see the server and scanner logs right after it comes back

I had this issue once - turns out the default settings on my NAS included a recycle bin in the NAS folder itself - where Plex naturally found the deleted file and re-added it to the library on the next scan.

Disabling the local recycle bin in the NAS folder fixed it

Scanner Log
Server Log

The file itself isn’t being restored though, just simply the entry in my library. If I go into the info for that entry, it says unavailable next the it.

Oh yeah, that’s different to my issue - Plex was quite happy to play the file from the recycled folder in my case.

Good luck, I think your server may be haunted

yeah this is weird. After hitting delete on the file in the get info window. can you “clean bundles” from that servers menu before scanning.

Nope. https://imgur.com/a/vpb5y3h

that’s the library menu, click MORE then it should be in the menu next to your server name

Oh, my bad, yes I do. I hit it, re-scanned and the entry still came back.

I’m still not sure what is going on. Was curious if you have tried rebooting the Shield and/or NAS after deleting the file but before doing a scan again. I can’t help but think there is some sort of cache or hidden file it is picking up.

So I deleted the entry via the “get info” screen, then did a force stop on the player and the server apps and then shut down the Shield TV, then I did a power cycle on the nas. After everything was back up and running a did a rescan and the entry never came back. I copied the file into and out of the movies folder multiple time and did a rescan each time and the entry appeared and disappeared every time as it should have.

I don’t know why that one file was causing a problem as other files in the same folder were not doing that, but whatever, it’s fixed now.

Thanks so much for your help.
