Did a reinstall on my Synology NAS and now I can't claim my server

Basically Plex stopped working. It wouldn’t show any of my libraries in the windows app or anything on the “Home” page for that matter. Tried a bunch of different things until I found this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/dzg05v/plex_not_showing_libraries_in_web_app/

my problem was exactly the same as this. So I uninstalled (while saving the data) plex and reinstalled it.

Lo and Behold… I can now see my server but it doesn’t seem to be claimed… so I’m trying to claim it and it won’t. The icon spins and its back to the “Claim Server” button.

Can anyone tell me whats wrong?

Server Version#: Version 1.41.1.9057

<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>

I checked the console… i got this warning:

[HttpClient/HCl#73] HTTP error requesting POST https://plex.tv/api/claim/exchange?token=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx8V8eLY (60, SSL peer certificate or SSH remote key was not OK) (SSL: no alternative certificate subject name matches target host name ‘plex.tv’)

[HttpClient/HCl#77] HTTP error requesting GET https://plex.tv/api/v2/features?X-Plex-Token=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxficate or SSH remote key was not OK) (SSL: no alternative certificate subject name matches target host name ‘plex.tv’)

[Req#2ee] FeatureManager: Couldn’t get features. Trying again soon.

May we have your Plex logs please.

Go to Plex Settings > Server > Troubleshooting and click on Download Logs. Drag the .zip file onto the Reply window and wait for the file to finish uploading before you click on Reply.

Alternatively, open File Station on the NAS and navigate to /PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server and then right click on the Logs folder and select Compress to Logs.zip.

Attach the .zip file to your post, thanks.

Thank you for your response. Here you go.

From your logs, you clearly have a certificate error.

Since you have updated to DSM 7.2.2, the only thing I can recommend is that you do the following:

  1. Uninstall Plex. First option, Uninstall Only (keep all files)
  2. Reboot the NAS
  3. Go to Plex Downloads and download the Intel 64bit package for DSM 7.2.2+
  4. Install Plex using the package you just downloaded.

In the meantime, I will ask @ChuckPa to chime in, as he may need to reset your Plex certificate.

I did this at the start of the process… but I will do it again.

Thank you.

I am hoping it is just an installation issue, but I fear it may be related to your certificate status at Plex, that is why I have asked @ChuckPa (Plex employee) to chime in, as he has access to the certificate status etc.

I also think its a certificate status issue because when I try to install using the claim token, it doesn’t work.

Is issues with certificate status a huge problem? Should I be worried?

No, they are usually robust, but every once in a while, something goes awry and they need to be reset or otherwise tweaked and only an employee can do that.

@ffhhkk

I see you’re using a VPN. This is where the certificate problem is likely occurring. Plex.tv sees your VPN provider’s certificate as part of the claiming exchange.

Can you turn off the VPN and then claim the server using the “Plex Claim Token” method in the Plex installer ?

Your network configuration is very irregular.
I see the ‘bond’ adapter (normal), but it doesn’t haven an IP address (irregular).
I then see the VPN adapter created and set as primary.

Hello ChuckPA. Thank you for your response.

The VPN runs on a windows based PC. The Plex media server runs on the synology NAS. So the NAS is not connected to the VPN.

Nonethless i have uninstalled… i am trying to claim a token now and the page is not loading.

furthermore… logging on to plex.tv is showing this:

all this is without the vpn…

I did some research. I now understand why you’re having difficulties.

Can you configure the NAS to use the VPN and change its default exit location?

Hello.

I kinda dont want to do that. Ive found that VPNs are always unstable.

Why is this happening all of a sudden? It was working fine until the DSM 7.2.2 update i installed.

Synology tells us they only changed how the Menus (inside the package) work and the format of the SPK.

These are the only two changes we made for DSM 7.2.2

This is the error PMS is seeing.

(SSL: no alternative certificate subject name matches target host name ‘plex.tv’)

It’s trying to connect to Plex.tv. It’s expecting the plex.tv certificate.

The certificate it’s being offered doesn’t contain , even as alternate names, plex.tv.

When you look at this page

This should be working,

When you enable the VPN, does it work correctly? (just to test)

Ok, so just so u know, chrome is installed on the windows pc machine.

i am accessing the synology dsm through chrome on windows.

after turning on the vpn… the claim token on plex.tv works… so does plex.tv

but the installation window is giving me this: (this was happening earlier as well)

i have also just discovered this: Reddit - The heart of the internet

Ok. I’ve got plex working on the synology. Upon turning on the vpn, when i reinstalled plex on synology it didn’t ask for what type of install… it just installed it. when i opened the plex media server, my server was already mine.

im a little worried now. if i discconect the vpn on synology will plex stop working?

I have discovered that plex.tv is not working in chrome but it is in edge.

So i finally got plex up and running again. I dont know why but remote access is being very problematic. It sometimes works and sometimes doesnt even though its always the same settings for port forwarding.

Another problem im facing is that now if i disable transcoding, plex will not stream remotely. So if im trying to watch something on my phone using a mobile network, it wont work. It is forcing everything to be transcoded which wasnt the case before.

I believe its because all connections to the server are insecure now for some reason. I dont know if this is a problem on the synology side or plex side but its happening after i updated both plex and to dsm 7.2.2.

First of all, Plex needs to transcode your media so that it can match the available bitrate of your network connection and to change codecs etc. and those requirements change from file to file, moment to moment. It is NOT a one size fits all deal.

With Plex, all of the LAN connections are insecure, but all WAN connections are very secure. Plex would not last long if that was not the case.

It seems though, that you have much bigger problems than Plex at the minute and most of them seem to stem from your VPN and network setup in general.

Try removing your VPN completely. Right now, you need to establish a proper network connection and get all of your network settings etc. in order.

Once you have done that, you can work on setting up the VPN again.

And remember, it is your network, Plex are NOT responsible for your network.

I wish you luck with that and please do let us know how you go with it.

Thank you for your response.

As i mentioned earlier, Plex runs off a synology NAS and doesnt run from behind a VPN. I added the VPN when you asked me to, and I have now removed it too.

Only my PC runs on a VPN. So my PC connecting to the NAS having issues, i understand. But I tried to access plex from my phone (through an external network) and this is the behavior that is coming through.

As mentioned earlier, this transcoding issue is new and was not there previously. Ive been using Plex forna few years now, and i do understand what you are saying but this wasnt an issue before.

Ill look for problems in my network setup but my connection is 1Gbps and nothing has changed over the past few days unless the ISP has done something without my knowledge.
