Difficulty With ESPN 30 for 30 series

Hopefully someone can help me figure this out.

Anyone familiar with ESPN’s 30 for 30 series… I have S01E16 and S01E17. In the TVDB site, S01E16 is called “THE TWO ESCOBARS”, and S01E17 is called “THE BIRTH OF BIG AIR”.

Here’s where it’s listed in TVDB

In my local directory, the files are as follows:
/TV SHOWS (ADULT) /30 for 30 /Season 1 S01E16.mp4 S01E17.mp4

So… now… on my Plex site, when I go into TV SHOWS, I see this:

As you can see, after SUPERNATURAL, it shows THE TWO ESCOBARS. That name is nowhere in the local file, so I’m guessing its getting it from TVDB. If I click on it, it takes me into the folder:

So, you can see it shows two episodes. And, when I click into SEASON 1, I get this:

In TV SHOWS it should show the series as called 30 for 30. And, within that, SEASON 1. And, then, the two episodes I have.

So… cannot figure out what I am doing wrong.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Have you given FileBot a chance to lookup and do the naming for you? It is a common tool to use for tough cases since it does the inquiries first then presents you with a list of possible choices in case of ambiguity. From there, it will rename the files per the template you’ve setup . There is a {plex} renaming template now to make it easy

These files were put on the server 2 days ago.

Excuse me for my ignorance. I don’t know what FileBot is. Just looked it up now, since you mentioned it, and found what I believe you’re referring to at Filebot.net. If this is correct, is this separate from Plex? I do this outside of Plex and then just place the file in the correct folder, in my local folders?

I apologize.

Yes www.filebot.net is where you get it from.

The general procedure is:

  1. gather your media external to where you will ultimately place it in plex
  2. open filebot and select ‘movie mode’ or ‘episode mode’. (edit/create the renaming rules to suit your installation because it will move for you too)
  3. drag and drop the file(s) into the left pane
  4. click match and resolve… watch the new names appear on the right
  5. if the proposed names (and location) are to your liking, hit ‘rename’.

As example, I capture all my OTA to /syno/downloads (a location on my synology nas)
My television episodes are available at /syno/tv

I create a television renaming rule of:

/syno/tv/{n}/Season {s}/{n} - {s00e00} - {t}

n = name, s = season, s00e00 = SxxExx value, t = title

with this saved as the Episode mode renaming rule, I drop tv episodes in the left panel (you will see this) and click “Match”.

After a few seconds, it presents the new proposed names for each in the right panel : /syno/tv/series/Season x/series - sxxexx - title.extension

Very easy.

Practicing with files away from your library is a good idea… for as fast as it helps, it can make a mess.

It’s best to do small batches (a season or 2 at a time as maximum)

Apart from the file naming (which is not wrong per se in the first post above), let’s not forget the possibility of embedded ‘title’ tags. Since you are using mp4 files, they must be taken into consideration.

I propose the following:
Go to Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB
In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.

Then perform the Plex Dance with the whole series.

Wow… this thing is driving me off the wall.

Thank you. I am going to download that and give it a whirl.

Ok… So, yes, I had embedded TITLE tags, as well as some additional info in there. Here’s what I did… I took the video file and completely removed all the title, tags, and anything else in the file. Now I have a new virgin MP4 file. No data.

As per your instructions, @OttoKerner, I did the following:

NOTE: I am just working with S01E16… until I get it working…

  1. I removed the entire series & MP4 file out of the local folders… “out of sight”.
  2. UPDATE LIBRARY (updated all libraries, actually)
  3. EMPTY TRASH
  4. CLEAN BUNDLES
  5. Then moved the files back into the TV SHOWS folder
  6. Then did UPDATE LIBRARY again.

All seems good, and then the same happens. What I noticed, however, is this… for whatever reason (I think that’s how it was improperly titled in the tags), its showing the series as being called THE TWO ESCOBARS, instead of 30 for 30. But, what’s funny is, if I take this file and now set up this new virgin file on another computer with a fresh install of Plex Media Server it shows up correctly. Its only messed up on my actual Plex server. Could the database be correct, and not correcting itself?

How did you do it?

  1. EMPTY TRASH

The trashcan in Plex?

  1. CLEAN BUNDLES

this one? Did you wait until it was finished (it may take a while)?

All seems good, and then the same happens. Could the database be correct, and not correcting itself?

This is exactly what the Plex Dance is about: cleaning any remnants from the database.
There are 3 possible reasons:

  1. the files still have embedded metadata
  2. the plex dance was not correctly executed
  3. the Plex database is damaged and therefore doesn’t work as expected
  1. can be tested by using a (dummy) file, which is named like the episode, but doesn’t contain anything

if 3), a message about ‘database corruption’ should appear in the Plex Media Server.log file after a re-start of the server

You can also opt for including the show’s title in the file name of all episodes. The numbers in the title may throw off Plex’s heuristics, so it makes sense to stick to the naming guide exactly.

/TV SHOWS (ADULT)
   /30 for 30
      /Season 1
         30 for 30 - S01E16.mp4
         30 for 30 - S01E17.mp4

Tried all the methods above. The Plex Dance was done exactly as indicated on the Plex Dance link.

  1. MOVE THE FILE OUT OF SITE. I took the folder out completely and placed it on my desktop.
  2. UPDATE LIBRARY. Done from the main page that shows all my libraries.
  3. EMPTY TRASH. Done from the main page as well.
  4. CLEAN BUNDLES. Done from the main page as well.
  5. Made sure the naming scheme was correct. Named exactly as shown above. 30 for 30 - S01E16, and that was in the SEASON 1 folder, and that was in the 30 FOR 30 folder.
  6. Placed the 30 FOR 30 folder into my TV SHOWS (ADULT) folder.
  7. Then UPDATE LIBRARY.

All done in that order.

I’m sure I’m doing everything right. I’m familiar with all the steps. And, after doing this all and everything still staying the same, I think I may have figured out the issue (or at least know where the problem is).

First of all, when I tried the file in another computer with a brand new installation of Plex, it worked fine. But, actually, that was incorrect. Looked at it later and it reverted to the same issue. So, completely different computer, does exactly the same thing.

Then I tried like you said above, took a new virgin video file and named it as per this episode (even though it really wasn’t) and it did the same thing.

If I put any other 30 FOR 30 episodes in their respective folders for the server, they all work fine, and they show up fine. ONLY S01E16 gives me a problem.

Notice, the first series listed above correctly shows a folder for 30 FOR 30. But, while all the episodes properly list in that folder, the only one that does not is S01E16. THAT episode, for whatever reason, creates its own series, called THE TWO ESCOBARS, and places S01E16 in there, in a SEASON 1 folder (the last series listed in the picture above). The naming scheme is exactly the same as the others, no different… tried it WITH & WITHOUT the episode name.

So, here’s where I think the problem is. Not sure if you are familiar with the 30 for 30 series. But, if not, they’re basically documentaries on ESPN. If I look up the individual episodes on the various databases (IMDB, The Movie Database, etc), they all correctly show as an episode of the 30 for 30 series. However, S01E16 also has a listing as its own show, its own documentary, not associated with 30 for 30. So, I think whats happening is that with this episode the server continues to think it is its own documentary (obviously getting the info from one of the databases). And, I have tried all different ways to override, but to no avail.

So… any thoughts or ideas? Could I be right on “why” this is happening? And, if so, any ideas on overriding is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

In cases of extreme hair pulling, manually editing is usually the best course of action.

When I get home tonight I’ll try a dummy file to see if I can help.

This sounds certainly weird.

What happens if you:

  • hold down the CTRL (on Mac ‘CMD’) key and then click first on the series poster for ‘30 for 30’, then on the series poster for the ‘rogue’ show
  • then on the left side on the ellipsis ( . . . ) and then on ‘Merge’

BINGO!

That worked.

It didn’t put the descriptions, title, or summary, but that I can manually add, so no big deal!

Thank you.

This was driving me more nuts than the kids.

Actually… correction… it DID put the descriptions and summary in. Just took awhile to download all the meta data!

Always put full title in each and every episode. My 30 for 30s had no issues matching

Didn’t do it initially, but added that later due to the problem. But, still didn’t fix it. Still baffled, to be honest. ONLY with episode 16, no other episodes. As long as its working now.

That is so weird. Had to be a database error of some kind. Well at least it is working now

Thank you everyone for your help. Now running smoothly!

Happy to see problem solved. Sorry for not following up, totally slipped my mind.
