Direct connect to tv?

Hi guys, I’m a noob to most of this. Here is my question. I’ve got a Samsung smart tv with the plex client app on it. The tv lives on a boat with usuallly no internet connection. My question… can I run say a raspberry pi plex server and have it connect directly to the tv with an Ethernet cable? I would bring a portable hard drive every time we went to the boat with new movies on it. I wouldn’t really have access to a monitor, unless I use the tv itself. Has to be simple for my wife and kids to operate with minimal intervention by me.

That’s all doable. However, not really officially supported and could break any minute. Another user essentially just did the same (see below link). I just think this solution to be unnecessarily complex.

Why don’t you just put LibreELEC (Kodi) on your RPi, attach the drive to it and connect the RPi via HDMI to your TV? Just let Kodi index the media when you are still at home.
