Apologies in advance – I’m a complete novice when it comes to networking. I’ve read through a bunch of posts on this issue, and most of them are way over my head. If you guys could dumb things down as much as possible, that’d be great.
First off, here’s my network setup:
Modem > Router > Switch > Plex Server (Windows 10 64-bit)
We have a couple of clients connecting via WiFi, and a couple that have hardline connections. 2 x SHIELDs and a couple of tablets, all running Android clients. One SHIELD has a hardline connection, the rest connect over WiFi
We have a PC and a laptop that both just use the web browser as a client, connecting through

The Plex Server is set up for remote access, and seems to be working normally. I haven’t manually specified a public port, it’s all configured automatically.
The Network Profile in Windows is Private
I believe the server has a static IP, though I’m not 100% on that.
IPv6 is disabled
Preferred network interface is set to Any
Local Network Discovery (GDM) is enabled
Treat WAN IP As LAN Bandwidth is enabled
Enable HTTP Pipelining is enabled
I just upgraded the router a few days ago, and wound up struggling to get the network set up; it’s an ASUS RT-AC86U
When testing out the Plex clients, they threw warnings that Plex was not corrected directly. They’re all able to play, but it looks like they’re buffering everything, not direct playing at all. Most of my media is x265 8-bit AAC.
So, let’s start with an easy (?) question: on an Android clients and a web browser-based player, how can I tell if a connection is “direct” or “indirect”?
From what I’ve read, it seems like an “indirect” connection is one that bounces off of remote servers, and is treated like internet-based traffic, rather than LAN traffic, is that right?
Would that be why nothing seems to Direct Play any more? I’m guessing the web browser player can’t Direct Play much, but the SHIELDs should be able to Direct Play pretty much anything, no?
How about the Android apps running on phones/tablets? Are they capable of Direct Playing media…?
Are there steps I can take to get all of the clients to directly connect to the Plex Server? Detailed, step-by-step troubleshooting instructions would really be appreciated. I’ve read a bunch of threads that are, like, “Super easy, bud. Just nslookup to the DNS and take the security token generated by the Rebinding Protocols and flibberjabber them in your blamzit, making sure to override the QWERTY path. With the Flavortown ports open, make sure not to peanutbutter the bindings.” Sure. Super easy, thanks.
