Direct Play Disabled

Server Version#:latest Qnap .qpk update
Player Version#:Roku
I have an old Netgear nas just running as a media storage device attached to a Plex server running on a Win7 machine. It’s getting full, so I bought a Qnap nas as expansion. I wanted to clean up my TV Shows (it’s a mess) on the Netgear and move them over to the Qnap. They have run on the Netgear/Windows no problem. When I copy a series over to the Qnap and try and play it on the Roku, some episodes run okay, but some episodes give error “Direct Play Disabled” and they won’t run from the Qnap. I’ve tried to set Direct Play to “force” and still have problems. Any ideas?

I need to make space on the Netgear, and the Movies don’t seem to have the problem, so maybe I’ll just move 100 movies over instead.

What QNAP did you get? Some are too low powered to be able to transcode anything. Forcing direct play doesn’t work if the codecs involved aren’t supported.

May I ask which QNAP you purchased and if you might be able to share the log files (setttings - server - troubleshooting - download logs) which you download right after trying to play back a file which fails?

The Qnap model is TS-231P. I got it because it was a great deal. I now have only 1 series on the Qnap for testing. The files type is mkv for all episodes and they’re all about the same size. Episode #1 plays, #2 does not play (Direct Play disabled error), and #3 does play.

The Qnap is model #TS-231P. I was trying a bunch of things to get it to work, so the logs could be a bit confusing. I only have 1 series on it now, and I’ll be doing some testing tonight, so I’ll provide the logs files from tonight’s testing.

I just went and looked at the file types of the other series that had the problem (along with the one series I left on the Qnap), and they’re all mkv. files…Hmm, it’s looking like you guys may be on to something regarding the codecs.

mkv is just the container. What’s important are the codecs involved. Can you provide the XML from PMS as explained in this article Investigate Media Information and Formats | Plex Support for episode 1 and 2.

I’m not ignoring…I’m in touch with Qnap and he’ saying I have the wrong Multimedia Console app. It does not have a transcoding menu item. I’m waiting on a reply. Also, I’ll compare the xml’s for each episode line by line. I’m a bit uncomfortable posting that info on a public forum…if you get my drift.

You can PM the XML info to me.

I just got a reply from Qnap, and you were correct about the Qnap not being powerful enough. He said the ARM processor doesn’t transcode. I think the reason it plays one episode and not the next is because Plex app is trying to do the transcoding, and the processor is getting jammed up sometimes, but not always. As far a I can see, the episodes are the same.

Strange that a new device can’t do what my 5yo Plex server has never failed to do, LOL! Oh well. I got a sweet deal on the Qnap. I’ll just turn it into redundant mirrored raw storage and run it through my Plex server - just like my diehard 12yo Netgear Readynas Duo hahaha!

Thanks to all for your help! It’s greatly appreciated.
