My system runs over “TS-h886-D1622-16G Intel® Xeon® D-1622 4 cores/8 threads 2.6 GHz processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.2 GHz), 16 GB DDR4 ECC memory (2 x 8 GB)”.
My server runs in a data center. My connection is 1GB for Download and 1GB for upload. Moreover, my connection in my home is 100MB download and 10mb Upload.
When I tried to watch any video as direct play, the plex doesn’t allow me to use direct play. On the other hand, when I connect to the Qnap device where the plex server runs, over VPN connection, Direct play works well.
I already control the settings many time every things set correctly.
I do not understant How direct play doesn’t active on standart connection, and How direct play active on VPN connection.
Not sure if you are using some particular app but if it is transcoding then I would look at the playback info in the app while it is playing to see what it says about transcode reason. or look at server logs to see the media decision when playback started.
Might be related to the fact the once a VPN is established, the “connection” to the Plex seems to originate from a LOCAL LAN IP or something ? That might impact certain decisions…

What is the remote quality set to in the app? and do you have auto quality enabled in the app you are using for playback? Looks like it is transcoding a video to 720p which is the default remote streaming quality.
When we connected to the system over VPN, our device will be like local device. However under this circumstances the other setting related with the internet connection has been done as it is described.
Remote Streaming is Maximum on the application. We also tried auto quality enabled or disabled. we tried both version and the result is same.
Moreover, we have tried over iphone, ipad, Apple TV, MAc PC and Windows pc as a client. we done all the setting for Direct streaming. however the result is always same.
