Disable User Select Screen in Plex Home??

Every time any user in my Plex Home logs in, they have to select their account after using specific credentials to log into that account. I’m getting somewhat frustrated that there seems to be no option to disable user switching in a Plex Home.

I want my accounts to use the features exclusive to Plex Home, but if someone logs in with a specific account, they should just be sent straight to the libraries accessible for that account. Just because I have a PIN on my parent account should not add an extra step, every single time someone logs in, for every user. Each user is using a unique login to access Plex anyway, so this just seems pointless to be the default (and only) setting.

Am I taking crazy pills? Is there a way around this?

Much obliged!

On the client app there is an option to automatically log in. If you select this you don’t need to select user or get asked for a pin code.

This works for me in the web app and iOS app.

I’m not sure if this will only work with Plex accounts or also with managed users. Not a major problem to create plex accounts either way.

Thanks halfpint_pirate_pete, I suppose I should have been more clear about the edge case of multiple users on the same devices. Auto-login works great if you’re the only one that uses, say, your phone or tablet. But in the case of multiple users sharing a FireTV or a PlayStation, for example, then we are back at square one.

Are the secondary accounts, other than the admin account, Managed Users?

No, the users in this case are individual member accounts that where invited into the plex home.

This is odd as I invited my family member into my home who previously had her own standalone account and it does not ask for a password when using fast user switching.

The problem isn’t that it asks for a password. The problem is, when a unique email and password are used to log into a plex account, if it is a part of a Home, all users go to a splash screen where all of the users in that home can be chosen. This is what I want to disable.

If you’re using a unique login, why would you need to choose your user account again before using plex? I’m not logging into my home, I’m logging into the account I want to use. Users shouldn’t have to effectively choose their account twice every time they log in.

If they’re shared devices, and all accounts are pin protected… And knowing you’re able to switch on the fly without logging out and back in with another account… Why even log out? If it’s a personal device (phone, tablet perhaps), why not use the option to automatically log in? Roku and Nvidia Shield TV here never get logged out, phone automatically logs in. If you’re not leaving some Home account logged in to use fast user switching, Home is pointless… It only ends up being complicated if you choose to make it so

Home isn’t pointless at all, if you want all users to have the ability to sync content or take advantage of the license in other ways.

There is really nothing complicated about this. If an account has its own login, you shouldn’t be prompted to choose between other accounts when you log in. I guess what I’m saying here is, it’s a feature request that only I want, that allows you to disable that function. Auto login is great if you’re the only person who ever uses that device. My scenario is not that case. Hence me asking this question in the first place.

As the owner of my server, I have an option, per friend, to allow sync. I would imagine you would as well… I have no idea about “in other ways” though

There is no way to disable the user picker. That is one of the main features of Plex Home. If you want these users to share in your Plex Pass, this is a small inconvenience they will have to put up with. Otherwise you will have to set them up as a standard user.

I’m just still unsure what the OP is really trying to accomplish. As near as I can see, if you have a Plex Pass, any of your users have access to pretty much any extras and there are per user settings for sync, camera upload and channels regardless of if they are “friend” or “home” users. Home just adds fast user switching. He hasn’t explained what his use case is that either of the methods I suggested won’t work.

  1. Devices that are shared/communal (e.g. Living room TV). Sign in with any Home user account, don’t bother signing out, make sure you have “automatically sign in” disabled for the client. Any time the screen saver comes up, you’re sent back to the user selection screen. Any Home user picks their user, enters PIN and they’re in.

  2. Personal devices. Sign in with your account, don’t bother signing out, make sure you have “automatically sign in” ENABLED, for your client. Any time you open Plex on, for example, your phone, you go straight to your account.

It’s this apparent repetition of signing in, entering pin, signing out, signing back in that is making it unnecessarily complicated. If it’s for “security”, just remember: because you’re in a Home, fast user switching means that regardless of what account is logged in via password, even if the initial user select screen was somehow bypassed and went directly to that user’s account dashboard, all they need to do is “change user” and your admin account is just a 4 digit PIN away.

I arrived here because I’m frustrated with the same thing. Specifically #2 in @Techn0mancer 's post above. I have the same setup and think it’s ridiculous that every time I open Plex on my cell phone I have to choose my user again. Same with using Plex from my Chrome browser. Every single time I go to my Plex in the browser, I have to choose my own user. My wife and I have our own Chrome profiles which means we never have to log out of our gmail or other websites and maintain cookies/internet cache separately which makes things run nicely. Plex should be able to handle the same thing. Or at least give us the option to do so. Plex already keeps track of users and devices. It’s a very simple feature request to include a checkbox that says “keep this user selected on this device”.

Every official Plex app has now an ‘Automatic Logon’ checkbox in its preferences.
Activate it.

Got it, awesome thanks @OttoKerner. Is there a similar option in the Web Browser?

edit: Nevermind, found it under Web > General. Thanks again.

Yes.
Settings - Web - General - ‘Automatically Sign In’

Caveat: this preference is stored in a web browser ‘cookie’.
If your web browser throws away all cookies when you close it, all preferences under ‘Web’ will revert to their defaults.
You need to tell your web browser to retain cookies from

  • plex.tv
  • plex.direct
  • 127.0.0.1
  • your local private IP of your Plex server

The issue I have is that once home is enabled
someone with a web brower logged into there restricted account get the pin prompt

At that pin prompt if the figure out the correct pin for the admin user they have NEAR FULL access to you server , they cant lock you out but could cause a lot of damage enabling/disabling features, etc

Can the Admin for home user have better protection ?
Like not be on the pin screen at all ?
2FA ?
Be restricted to only the admin account ?

If the admin user could get some better protection then home would become a great feature, but right now its open up a big security issue

well, that is one reason why you shouldn’t invite people that are not in your house or immediate family, to your plex home.

if you can’t trust them with the keys to your real house (or car if they are a kid), perhaps they shouldn’t be in your home.

that said, hardening the admin user is something many people want.
