I had added some home users recently. Now I want to be able to go into the Plex webpage but it keeps asking me to select a user. At some time I fixed this on my desktop such that when I go to http;//app.plex.tv it goes directly to my user’s home page. But on my laptop (some OS, browser, account, etc) it prompts me to select a user. How do I change that so that it works like my desktop?
After going to the Plex web app page on your laptop, click the wrench icon (settings) and that should bring you to the “Plex Web - General” settings page. On that page, check the “Automatically Sign In” box then scroll down and click save changes. Now you will login to the last account that was logged in automatically.

Check automatically sign in. It’s a per client device setting.

I was just about to check and noticed that it wasn’t set on my laptop. I set it and it didn’t work! Then I saw I neglected to save the changes. That worked. Thanks.
Yeah I understand why they did it as per-client, but I also wish it was synchronized lol.
At least for browsers, there is the option to synchronize the settings.
This option is the 2nd to last one on that same page.

I’m not sure if you know this but the “Automatically Sign In” setting is completely client-specific. That setting doesn’t get synced. Try it. If you think about it there’s a really good reason why it’s not synced.
I was just complaining coz I wanted to have my cake and eat it too lol.
I just verified that as since you mentioned it I also realized I did have to recheck that when logging into different browsers.
However, I actually disagree that, for the web app specifically, that setting is not synchronized (not arguing with you, just stating my opinion).
Reason I disagree with that is because it is a “Plex Web setting and customization” and based on that setting I referred to it states in the description (for me since I have it turned on) “Currently all Plex Web settings and customization are synchronized with other Plex Web instances.” To me, that setting not being synced means that, in fact, not all settings are synchronized. That setting is specifically under the “Plex Web - General” settings, so to me that description text is misleading/false.
Anyway, without specifically calling out Plex, that won’t change and honestly it is really not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things.

Haha yes I agree. Sometimes we must take what we can and be happy with what we have. I just feel bad for my users because I think most everyone would prefer not to have to type in the code since (in my opinion) everyone is using their own devices, whether it be mobile or home TVs. Perhaps if there was an improvement made on this front, a popup or checkbox be added that says “Don’t ask me for the code on this device” on the enter your code screen.
@ChuckPa Have you guys considered this idea?
Yes, they did.
From what I remember, and this did include the cofounders in the discussion
(that big of a deal), it came down to protecting children.
- Mom and Dad watched something on the Living room TV
- Finished, exited the app… TV went into screensaver
- One of the kids grabbed the remote and opened Plex.
- Whose stuff do they get ? Mom & Dad’s or theirs ?
Some folks give their children “Managed User” accounts – so it had to be secure there.
Some folks do the same for relatives.
Managed users make certain the kids don’t get into the parents’ content. / anywhere they aren’t (a different form but even more strict than “shared user”)
Use cases:
Picking up Dad’s iPhone – Same protection.
Kids go into the camper when mom and dad are swimming . Now what?
There are a LOT of variables and use cases they went through to the N-th degree
Yes, this setting seems to be client-side. New wrinkle, my TV (Vizeo 65 in) has Plex installed. I suffer the same problem - when I start Plex it shows me the Select user screen. I’d like it to default to me but there is no Automatic Sign-in option. I assume this is just a limitation of the Vizio version of the Plex app and I’m just stuck with it.
The checkbox generally only appears when you have switched user to the Plex home admin account.
(I’ve no experience with your brand of TV, so might still be affected by some other issue.)
On a browser, I can set the Auto-sign-in option and it works fine so I assume I’m the Plex Home Admin already.
They mean that you need to log in as the admin “managed user”, not any other sub-account. For example, I only log in to the actual admin Managed User myself when I manage the server on a browser, and I never log in on my TV client. But to allow auto-sign-in, I must select my admin, enable that option to auto-sign-in, then swap back to my personal non-admin Managed User.
Nevermind. Brain fart! Plex works fine. It was YouTube that presents the multiple users and doesn’t have an autologin option. Though YouTube on my Amazon Fire TV seems to automatically log me in as my user. Turns out that with the YouTube family plan, if there’s only one user added to the TV then there’s no user selection process.
