Disabled automatic subtitle retrieval

Hi,

I am a long-time plex server user and used to run my plex server from a windows machine.
I migrated to running plex from a synology NAS about half a year ago.
I originally thought the built in subtitle feature was neat as it could be very useful, but found out that it sometimes picked up the wrong subtitles and have disabled it (in the agents section).
However, subtitles keep popping up no matter what I do.
It’s been a long time since I configured it but it’s finally annoying me enough to warrant coming here to look for answers.
Anyways, I was wondering if there was anything I could do about this. Is there something else I need to configure before the subtitle configuration takes effect?
Should I backup plex (i just want to keep the library details) and try a clean install?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Trumpy,

Nah, the videos in question are old files from before I migrated and also before I started using plex.

Yep, double-checked the agent settings, opensubs are still unchecked.
The episode details on plex when I pick out an episode to watch says that there are no subs selected, but once I start playback, the subs come on (sometimes they’re subs for the wrong episode or they are very delayed).

Is there some way I can remove or refresh the content so that it’s accurate/correct?

Thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for following up.

So, I should have been more clear - when I select videos, I meant using Plex on my Android TV.
Having tried to systematically find an episode through the browser interface and play that video on my TV, I was not able to replicate the situation that happened the other day - where it would say on my Android TV that no subtitles are selected and then proceed to play them (should have made a note of it, then…).

This being the case, I’d still like to remove the subtitles that opensubs downloaded for me (they still come up in plex on both the TV and windows as external SRT or SMI or something, but I can’t find them in the same directory as the media content). I’m going to do a file extension search on the plex library volume on my NAS, but was wondering if there might be anything else that I need to do to make sure that Plex doesn’t auto download subtitles again.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the quick response and information trumpy.
It’s sure to be useful if I end up needing to rebuild (dreading it a bit, of course).

EDIT: Just did a quick search on my NAS and found about two thousand subtitle files (srt, sub and smi). Just like you said, the names of these files were hex values, but the extensions were still intact. Either way, I’ve removed them and it seems like nothing is broken - although I did refresh metadata and rescan the library.

Haha, it’s all good.
I was worried about the same potential for problems since there were xmls and directory structures involved. From a quick check of the same files from my earlier problem, looks like no issues, but will report back if the situation changes. fingers crossed!

You can remove those automatically downloaded subtitles with WebTools
