Disappearing files?

Hello all, and thank you in advance for your assistance.

I’ve noticed this issue in the past, but am trying to finally solve it. As an example, I have a set of Harry Potter movies for the lil one. These movies were encoded by the same person and are broken up into part 1 & part 2. I am using the Pleks server on my Windows comp, and stream to my Roku tv. Here’s the situation

I create a folder for the videos, select the format and then the folder containing the files. It recognizes them all at first but certain files vanish/disappear. As an example. Part 1 of a movie will show up but part 2 disappears from within the pleks server pretty quickly after it’s added. I have tried putting the file in its own separate folder but the issue persists and then doesn’t see any media in the folder.

I have taken a look through the faq and troubleshooting articles. Any info or help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks again,

How are the files named?
For mulit-part movies follow this guide:
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200264966-Naming-Stacked-or-Multi-Part-Movies

I use “Movie name (year) - Part 1.ext” and “Movie name (year) - Part 2.ext”
I do not bother with individual folders as I use no trailers or other “special” feature that require individual folders and I find it just makes maintenance harder if I try to use them.

BTW: Since you mentioned “Harry Potter” movies there is one caveat with them. That is there actually are two separate movies named with “Part x” that are not part of one movie. I have them named like this:
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (2010).mp4
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011).mp4
That works for me.
Note that the “Part x” section proceeds the date. Also for those the date is very important. In general every movie should have the date section as it makes it a LOT easier for Plex to identify the movie involved.

Thanks for the article, we aren’t trying to watch both parts as one. We’re just trying to get the files available to watch individually. But for whatever reason part 2 doesn’t get recognized. Same avi format and made by the same person who did part 1. Happens with other videos too, but obviously not all

Plex will automatically combine both files if you name them “part1” and “part2”. If you want Plex to list them separately, you’ll need to name them something different without any of the keywords in that support article. i.e.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) [1 of 2].mkv
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) [2 of 2].mkv

Plex may still end up thinking they are 2 copies of the same movie, but this time you can use the split feature to separate them back out. You cannot split the movie where Plex thinks they are part 1 and part 2.

Thanks for the people who answered this! Was about to make my own thread
