In the current and past revisions of the Plex web app (9+ months):
- When a match is found for a TV show or movie, the artwork is displayed, then rotates and disappears (no image / artwork, can click on the artwork to play the movie/tv show, etc.)
- This happens in the dashboard, and individual movies/TV shows area
- Refreshing the browser re-displays the artwork, however in the dashboard when adding several movies or TV episodes, some display the artwork and others rotate into no artwork. minutes or hors later, some of the other movies or episodes are no longer displaying artwork so it’s not an individual movie, file type, or TV show/episode.
This has been an annoyance for a long time in many different Plex Web revisions. I hit the browser refresh constantly due to this.
Am I the only one experiencing this (IE 10 & 11)?

…CAN’T click on the artwork to play the movie/tv show…
Always had problems with IE and Plex.
Just use Chrome or Firefox. Safari is also a good choice.
If the problem persists on those browsers also, I would check the storage for faults.
Thanks but I have had the same problem with Firefox as well. I haven’t tested it lately since about 2-3 upgrades of PMS (ya gotta love the acronym for Plex Media Server, as sometimes I think it has it. lol).
IE is may standard use browser as I try to keep PMS server lean without too many other apps.
I’m 90% sure that the flipping is an intentional feature that has gone awry.
The image/artwork in PlexWeb actually flips before disappearing. the image/artwork flips horizontally into a reverse image (like flipping a microfilm where the left is right and the right is left) before disappearing, then a refresh brings it back with no flipping/transitional of the artwork. This happens:
- When it initially matches the media
- sometimes at random
- ANYtime I go to review the details of a movie/TV Show
I have noticed lately that if several images/artwork is flipped (happens frequently), then I refresh it (F5), as a new match and association with the artwork is linked, the ones that flipped previously do not flip again, even though I may have five refreshes when I add multiple movies/TV Shows. However at later times it will start appearing again.
I honestly believe that not many folks are using PlexWeb as I cannot be the only one experiencing this continuously even after an OS install (not update) on Win7 & Win10 and new install of PMS with only the media library being re-linked for years in multiple versions of Plex !

there is no play button, when hovering on poster (or blank rectangle) ? or it just doesn’t do anything?
are you using the local web app or from http://app.plex.tv/web/app# ?
Local Web, No image/artwork (after it flips and disappears), so there is also no play button, edit icon, more info ellipses, mark watched, etc. Just an empty off color rectangle where the artwork used to be.
Here’s a short video example of this problem.
I have minimized the selection area and only shown what happens when clicking on the details of a movie. If you watch it in slow motion it or freeze frame it you’ll notice the artwork flips horizontally (left is right, right is left) before displaying the image correctly (not flipped) then disappearing. An F5 refresh brings the artwork back with no flipping (for a while then it will eventually happen again).

thanks for video. Does it happen in Edge as well?
Regarding #2 Do other Plex Players show the correct artwork etc? Like the mobile apps if you use them. Would think is actually a server issue if those don’t display right either.
If only a web app issue can you try to get some console logs from IE to see if there are any error messages when page loading and you see that happening https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg589507(v=vs.85).aspx
All players (except Edge) display the proper artwork, IE does as well but flips the image (as in the video) until refreshed.
I’ve used the IE logs, no errors, that’s why I think it is an intentional feature gone awry. And the fact that practically no one uses Plex Web locally on the PMS server is why others are not reporting the same thing, and why it is getting no visibility with the developers. :-/

I assure you, there are plenty of users who use Plex web locally. Including most of the developers because when testing/developing they connect via IP to their local dev machines. There are probably not many who use IE anymore though.
The flipping is what happens when metadata is finished updating for an item. You can manually make it happen on another browser ( if any work ) by selecting Refresh Metadata from the ellipses menu on bottom right when hovering over poster
Have you tried doing an uninstall/reinstall. Assuming you do not have any extensions etc installed or you have tried disabling them if you do. Have yo tried connecting via IP from a different computer?
I experience this, as well as a new annoying bug on the latest Plex Web app release (the one on Plex servers, not 127.0.0.1) - I scan for new movies and both previous movies as well as movies I have just recently added - sometimes lose the MANUAL metadata. Sometimes even though the lock icon turns orange when I manually edit things (usually Collections and Content Rating) after saving and going back in to check the edited data, the lock is no longer orange - allowing the metadata changes to be overwritten.
@BigWheel
- Yes this happens on IE, Firefox, and Edge on Win7 and Win10
- I have reinstalled and it still happens (upgrade from Win7 -to- Win10 and twice since for non-related reasons)
For clarification, the flipping is the problem as when it flips the image/artwork does not come back until an F5 or Ctrl+F5 refresh.
… Still annoying unrequested feature… lol

This is also happening for me, I’m on Safari and the latest PMS version (1.15.4.919).
I lose all the cover art while on the home dashboard, not sure if this is happening when adding media or just randomly.
The cover art is displayed fine again if I just refresh the browser or change to any other library view and then go back to the home dashboard. So cover art is not really lost, it just goes blank but for everything in the home dashboard.
@BigWheel has anyone tried to reproduce this bug? It happens so frequently that it should not be hard to repro

I seem to be having this issue on the new dashboard also (see attached)
I see this in MacOS, and Windows 10, across all browsers - Safari, Firefox (Nightly), Edge, Chrome. It had been happening for a short while, then it cleared up, but it’s happening again. Just like everyone else, a refresh brings it back. Is there a way to force a reload of all art - not just metadata?
Edit: I switched to UNO in hopes that it would fix it, but it’s happening on UNO, too.
Looks like no Plex development team really cares about this.
No reply, no nothing.
What is the point of reporting issues in the forums, really?
In fact this isn’t even a good practice for reporting bugs, don’t you guys have a proper bug reporting system that you do check and follow up with?
