Displaying of Collections

I’ve noticed the displaying of Collections has changed. They used to be listed in alphabetical order, but this new layout leaves me with me scratching my head to figure out what order they are sorted in. Can you shed some light on this new “feature”?

I’ve realised there is an option on the server, if you edit your library… under advanced you can chose to hide items which are in a collection. This way it will only show the collection posters and not the individual movies too.

Everything is still in alphabetical order, but any movies in a collection will use the collection name for ordering

Items in a collection now seem to be sorted by release date. Wouldn’t it make more sense for it to be by sort order, as the regular movies list is? This is how it used to be. That’s what I’d prefer myself, until such a time as Plex allows us to create custom orders depending on the collection we’re viewing.

I’ve done a lot of customisations to the “sorty by” field to get this right, and now have it ignored for lulz is just weird. Pointless.

Yeah this is a step forward visually, but three steps backwards functionally. I use this to filter out the TV shows I actually watch myself vs the 300+ shows that I don’t watch. This is the main way I select what TV episodes to watch. Now I find myself pulling up the collection on my Android tablet and “Plex casting” it to my Apple TV. I’ve also noticed that the watched flags aren’t updated after viewing like they were in the previous collections “design”. I now have to go out and come back into the list to see them updated.

Click to edit the collection… under ‘advanced’ there is the option to change ‘collection order’ from ‘release date’ to ‘alphabetical’. Each collection needs to be done individually (or select multiple to do the at once)

No collections are for anything you want them to be for - including TV Shows and Music. I happen to have a collection called “My Favorite TV Shows” where I can filter out the shows I watch from the 300+ that I don’t personally watch. This functionality still works correctly on all of the other Plex clients that I use (Roku, Android, Web, etc).

This is an example of how they are sorted normally in the Web client, but they are also this way in Android and used to be this way on the Apple TV too.

Yes I do, because I also share my server with 50+ people who do watch other content than I do. I have 300+ ACTIVE shows in my library - over 1k shows all together along with over 5k movies - but the size of my library is not the point. The collections in the latest version of the Apple TV client have no understandable sort order. They are not sorted by latest addition, nor alphabetically, or in any other manor that makes sense. They still work correctly on the other 3 clients I use: Roku, Web, and Android.

Sorting of collections even under tv shows works fine for me too… I don’t normally have collections set up for them, however I have tested it by adding 2 shows to a collection called test. Plex grouped them together as expected and the apple tv app display them like this…

Under ‘all’ it shows everything in line with no collection sorting…

Under ‘by collection’ it shows shows the test collection and on selecting that it shows the shows in alphabetical order (as selected)

Ok well this is what I now see where previously before the new changes to collections they were clearly in alphabetical order. I’m just asking someone to explain what order they are in now so I can easily navigate this “new” feature.

@jcorwin - you are a narrow minded individual… how about you let others answer from now on?

Just asking what the sort order is now on the Apple TV when it is alphabetical on all of the other clients…Since you don’t know Mr. jcorwin - why not let someone else who knows answer?

I don’t have an issue with sort order, it’s acting fine. But just screenshots of it being out of order doesn’t really help figuring out why.

For your screenshots, pull up the top bar so we can see that. Also on the web app going in and edit one that is sorting wrong and show the screenshot for name and sort.

Are you sure you have the sort set to alphabetical? This needs to be edited on the Plex webapp and not the localhost… http://app.plex.tv

In your ‘all’ tv shows go to collections…

Then edit your collection… go advanced and make sure collection order is set to alphabetical

Thank you @chriskeens! It seems the server’s built in web app does not have the same menu options as the one you get when you go through plex.tv. Seeing these options and changing it to alphabetical now and I’ll give that a try. Again thanks for your help!
