Noticed recently that there is no way to sort the order of movies shown in a collection. While clicking on an actor for instance will allow their movies to be ordered any number of ways, while in a collection, it often switches between alphabetical and year with no way for the user to choose the order.
you can (have to) configure for each collection how you want it to sort its content/items. you’re right… at the moment there’s only 2 options for that: alphabetical (using the sort name) and by release date.
I think there’s been a feature request to allow for more but that sort of faded away with no specific parameters to sort by. (cannot find it at the moment)
there’s another feature request asking for an option to define the default sort order per library too.
Though I’ve had it sporadically change for what appears to be no reason, one moment it’ll be by year and the next it’ll be alphabetical. For instance, if I change the poster of one item in the collection, it can swap the sort order, then I change another poster, and once again it changed sorting order.
Where’s the configuration for each collection? I’m probably just skipping right over it in the settings, lol.
I do have the relatively new feature of having the collections listed alongside other movies disabled though, so could be why I’m not seeing that option.
ah, thanks, missed the dropdown to have it only display collections.
I’ve normally just been looking at them by first clicking on the movie, then going to the collection that it’s in.
But I’ll have to keep the advanced sorting option in mind for the future. Hopefully the collections page will get another look over to be a bit more consistent.
A few Plex Media Server versions ago, when I first learned of and tried out Collections, the collection view included a limited set of sort options (Title and Release Date, I think) and, as with other places that have sort options, selecting the currently selected option would reverse the order of the sort.
I’m curious why this very useful feature was REMOVED? Now we must dig into the Advanced settings for each individual collection to choose either Release Date or “Alphabetical.” And those do not appear to be ‘reversible’ as they were before. Also, “Alphabetical” is quite vague when there are many text fields in a movie/tv show’s properties. “Alphabetical” appears to apply to the “Sort Title” but it could just as well be sorted by Director for all I know from the option name.
Please, bring back the option for users to sort their Collection view as THEY see fit instead of requiring the Plex manager to set it for them. The existing setting is great for a DEFAULT, perhaps, but not as the only option.
@nurbles: not sure about that… I’ve been using the inline collections heavily ever since they started but I don’t remember there being a different option to sort. that being said… yes, it’d be helpful to have more sort options – preferably just the regular sort model you got in the actual movies list.
