Server Version#:4.8.4
I seem to have an ongoing problem with my DLNA server. I feed a Hooper 3 Media player and a LG TV media player. After my last bout of problems everything seemed to be working fine. The computer is a MacMini OS 10.14.6, which is my home automation computer where the Plex server lives. I want it to have a static IP of 192.168.1.5. Several things link back to that static address.
Until recently that has worked just fine. Today, the Plex server is a no show on the 2 media players that I use. If I switch to DHCP which brings me to 192.168.1.109. The Plex server is back on line. I should be happy except like I said, several things are keyed to the .5 IP address.
I tried setting DHCP with manual address in the network control panel using the .5 IP address. It’s a no show. If I setup a manual IP at .109 the Plex server shows up. I’m not understanding the dynamics here. The DHCP range in my network is 50 to 200. I leave the first 50 and the last 50 for fixed IP address. I’m working on address reservations within the DHCP range on most of the DHCP devices to get some sort of control over the network.
I’ve switched from an Amplifi Mesh system, which my router has a WAN port issue, it was not allowing speeds above 100 mbps. That is where I first encountered this problem. I don’t know if the WAN port had anything to do with it, but the router was problematic. It has been replaced with a T-Link Deco M9 Mesh system which when I set it up the problem went away for a couple of weeks. Now it’s returned.
The question would be, can anyone think of why manual IP .5 would stop working, DHCP .109 works and then manual .109 continues to work. I’m using the google DNS servers 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4. I know just enough about networking to be dangerous but I’m not an expert by any means. This has got me scratching my head.
Some further testing . . . If I set a manual address in the 2-50 / 200-250 range Plex server is off line. Within the DHCP range of 51-199 server is on line. I’m not sure how many years I’ve been running the Plex server but it was always on the computer at 192.168.1.5. I don’t understand why now it doesn’t work. I’m hoping someone here might be able to lend some insight.
Do you have that LAN IP address(192.168.0.5) reserved in your router as it can be stolen by another device?
Reserving or having static LAN IP of all your devices is a good practice on a home or retail grade Router. It helps with speed and collisions of packets. This can be detected with a router diagnostic test for TX and RX errors on your LAN.
The reason theres a range that will not work might be some magic to protect your devices. Are all your devices used in ( .02 to .50) Just a guess.
The IP is 192.168.1.5 which is in the first 50 which is not in the DHCP zone so it can’t be stolen by another DHCP device. Doing network scans shows nothing has come into the IP address. Once again it’s worked for years so why the magic is staring now is a mystery. In theory and in practice up until recently 02-50 has held firm to mainly computers and printers that I can set a manual IP address to.
Maybe the router is feeling it’s age, electronics will be electronics. Maybe a router reset would resolve the anomaly. But if it working now on a different LAN IP and there are no other issues it really is just doing your head in.
The router is 2 weeks old. The problematic one has been replaced. Yes the other IP address works but why? Once that is figured out then we can go on to curing cancer.
