Doctor Who (series 14) 2023/2024+

Currently Plex.TV lists Doctor Who as Doctor Who (2023). TVDB lists it as Doctor Who (2023) 2024, and theMovieDB lists it as Doctor Who (2024).

Regardless of this madness, Plex does find the show appropriately however all the episodes and specials are not populating with titles when they should be. The show for some reason has 2 TVDB ids attached, the correct one per TVDB 449991 and another one that doesn’t exist at all, 448305. Can we please get this corrected to be just the one TVDB item so that it will populate the episodes.

There is nothing else causing this as I have checked and rechecked by moving files out and back in, manually picking it via TMDB or TVDB or IMDB ids and it finds the same series over and over but no episode titles

For reference if you change the episode ordering to MovieDB Airing it works fine and updates. Its only if you use the TVDB ones that it fails

For reference top pic is Plex using TMDB aired, bottom pic is Plex using library default aka Plex Scanner/Series. If you want a screenshot of Plex using TVDB I can do that too but it mirrors the Plex Scanner one

Propogation time is not the issue as it has been over 72 hours. Plex has two TVDB ids attached to the show, one that does not exist and that is causing the problem

Same issue with the new Doctor Who (2023) - poster etc all good. ‘Originally Available’ 2023-12-25.
No episode metadata except ‘Originally Available’ which is greyed but has ‘1969-12-31’
So something isn’t right.

Running plex server Version 1.40.2.8395 on Synology DSM 1019+ 7.2 latest.

Doctor Who at the metadata sites is currently contentious it seems. If you check into some of the discussion threads on TMDB for “Doctor Who (2024)” you’ll see a lot of back and forth about all this stuff.

TVDB calls it “Doctor Who (2023)” but both sites have the same specials\season 1 listings. So at least that part should pull okay with metadata for it all. My Specials for Doctor Who 2023 at least have full metadata (I haven’t gotten the new season yet). Might try adding the {tmdb-##} or {tvdb-##} tag?

But the metadata sites might be doing some back and forth on this series so the Plex cache might be off and waiting to refresh. The cache typically uses a mix of the info from the sites so if things were way outta whack might’ve thrown it off.

No. TVDB calls it Doctor Who (2023) but has a 2024 start date so it aligns with TheMovieDB and also with what Disney and BBC are calling it.

Per the ERDI metadata database the industry uses, they put it in as a new series called Doctor Who starting in 2024. so the alignment is all valid between all sites now as of Monday 5/13.

The issue is that Plex has 2 TVDB IDs attached to this series as I listed above. One is an empty ID that doesn’t exist (maybe it did pre Monday) and the other is accurate. This is causing the episode title issues

I have the tags properly. They don’t work. I have listed out what is wrong above. If you use TVDB on plex for episode ordering, it shows as Episode 1, 2, 3 for Specials or otherwise. If you use MovieDB airing for episode ordering it works. The cause is Plex having two TVDB IDs attached. I have confirmed this by using Kometa (Plex-Meta-Manager) and it pulling both IDs from Plex.

So it sounds like the cache is behind then so hopefully one of the Plex folks can help get it sorted if it’s not sorting itself out after some of the recent changes (the 5/13 changes could still be waiting on cache since that can take 48-72 hours).

Last time I had looked at it all was months ago when it was first getting sorted and I kinda just gave up and decided to wait a bit for it to settle down; thus the not bothering to get Season 1 yet. :slight_smile:

I tried to add Doctor Who (2023) today, which somewhat worked, but my entire Doctor Who (2005) collection then vanished from view :frowning:

This here is the exact situation why you should always add the release year of s01e01 to the folder name of the show, as is described in the naming guide. Even if it’s matched correctly at first without the year.
Years later a new show could be introduced by the same title, which would suddenly change the default match.

My Doctor Who (2005) collection has that exact top level folder name, so no obvious reason it should vanish. The new Doctor Who (2023) folder added only contains the 3 new episodes I put in there.
I assume at this point I’ll just have wait a few days for whatever changes are going to propagate.

Did you try to rematch it to the now deleted show on TheTVDB?
Take a good look at the Plex media info XML and the guid’s.

But maybe it is indeed best to just wait until the mess has been cleared from the caches. This issue is definitely on the radar at Plex HQ.

This is not a cache issue anymore. It’s been broke for a week now. Themoviedb works. TVDB has had the episode names for a week. Please read my post as I’ve explained why it’s broke still. Even today Plex still has the wrong TVDB ID and the right one.

My naming and folders and everything are accurate. Show works fine across the board for the movie db only. Again it’s cuz Plex has two TVDB ids for show and it has been a 5 days since TVDB was updated

@OttoKerner

I’m not sure why so many people are having such a hard time with this. The transition was very smooth for me. Everything worked the very next day after TVDB created a separate show for the new season. All I did was create a new folder with the new TVDB id and put those couple of episodes in there. Like so: Doctor Who (2023) {tvdb-449991}

Because you probably use the movie db for your episode ordering not tvdb

Christian, literally nowhere in your original comment did you indicate you were actually using the TVDB ordering.

Okay, Hannah.

To test and hopefully sort out exactly what’s wrong here so we can put it to bed…

PLEASE show/tell me if/where I make a mistake.

  1. Doctor Who [ original series → Doctor Who (1963) ]

  • Using TMDB → I get “Doctor Who (2005)” matching :x:
    – (NOTICE: I do not have the year nor should I need it )

  • Using TVDB → Same problem

================

  1. Using TVDB
  2. Adding Year (which I should not need do)

My Doctor Who (2005) , which is TheTVDB, looks like this.

Is this much correct ?

The issue we’re facing is with Doctor Who (2023), not original or 2005. Episode metadata does not populate if ordering is set to TVDB, despite TVDB having had the metadata for them for many days: Doctor Who (2023) - - Season 1 - TheTVDB.com

To be clear, the series can match correctly to the 2023 listing in the Plex agent, but only TMDB ordering populates the episodes correctly.

@Hannah_GBS

Yes, I’m aware of the issue here but Doctor Who has been problematic since the 2005 series first aired.

To ensure we have the complete picture here, I want to confirm everything from 1963 → end of the Jodi Whittaker series is intact.

I will now start into the new series.

Gotcha. Yes (for me at least), everything from 1963 to 2022 (end of Jodie) is fine.

This looks to be the problem ?? This new series is available 1969 ???

Time to experiment & confirm or not.
