in the last few weeks i tried different speakers which are advertised as airplay-enabled.
none of them is detected by plex.
i read here in the forum that many airplay speakers in fact only are airtunes speakers, which is not supported by plex.
so i set my hopes in the new airplay2 protocol and ordered a sonos one, which supports airplay2 with latest firmware.
unfortunately it is also not detected by plex media player at all…
did someone manage to airplay music to a speaker with plex?
if not, how do you stream music to speakers? i know there is the chromecast protocol, but not really many speakers support it out of the box (only a chosen few, which always have other limitations in functionality that i don’t like)
i don’t see what is plex’s approach in supporting streaming music to speakers.
at least dlna renderer support was enough for me, but that isn’t supported either…
Not sure if this is the same reason, but when I couldn’t airplay it was resolved by turning on remote access on the server. Maybe this works for you too.
no that doesn’t help. no airplay at all…
do you have a speaker working over airplay with plex? if yes, what speaker is it?
Plex has nothing to do with Airplay at all.
Maybe you can use Airplay speakers when using the Plex app on an iOS device, but I haven’t tested it.
Well, in my case its working.
First: I normally use the sonos app and play my plex music from there.
But i just tested with my iphone - you can play directly from the plex app to a sonos one.
I started the playback (on the iphone) then swiped up to get to the settings.
There you find a player app/symbol with the just playing title.
In the upper right is a symbol where you can switch between local playing (iphone in my case) and airplaying (seg. sonos one).
Hope this helps you.
(Is working also with the youtube app and others…)
Plex has explicit support for Sonos. Caveat: your server remote access needs to be functional.

i know that plex is integrated into the sonos app and i had it working without problems.
but i like the original plex app better than the sonos integrated one and prefer to use that one.
and i only had the sonos one here for testing, because it is one of the few speakers at the moment which supports airplay2 (where i put my hopes in…)
the speaker i use on a daily basis is a libratone zipp, which is airplay capable, too. airplay2 is announced for it, but not yet available. but airplay1 or 2 does not make a difference, as my experiment with the sonos one showed.
the problem seems to be that i use the app on an andoid phone and not on an iphone, where airplay is supported like naturally as an apple product.
nevertheless airplay should work with the android app, too (according to plex).
but sad enough it does not for me…
has anybody airplay working with the plex android app??
I’m wondering how you all are streaming to your speakers with plex? does everybody of you have a Sonos speaker or chromecast? as I already said above, there aren’t many speakers that are chromecast capable out of the box.
of course there’s the possibility of using a Chromecast audio, but that’s an ugly solution from an optical point of view. another cable lying around, the chromecast audio itself (even if it is relatively small) and it needs it own power adapter, too. not very nice to look at…
what are you using? I’m really very interested in…
nobody?
does nobody have the same setup like me? I cannot believe that…
how are you streaming music with plex?
I don’t stream music directly to speakers, but to my A/V Receiver which has several types of interfaces built in (ChromeCast, AirPlay, BlueTooth etc.). I don’t even know which type of interface it’s using, it just works.
I stream to a couple different DLNA receivers connected to a matrix amp to speakers in the ceiling throughout the house and control which rooms get the music through a home automation interface.
