Does Mac Mini not have trailer function?

Hello all,

I apologize in advance for perhaps a noobie question. I am currently running Plex Media server straight off my mac mini, which I use it for home media PC. I am a plex pass subscriber. But, as I launched the Plex client app straight off my mac mini, I can never get any trailers to play, or even the pre roll clip. I seemed to be able to get it to work on the mobile iOS app, but never the actual native Mac Mini Plex client app. Am I doing something wrong, or is this simply not a function supported with the mac mini platform? any insight on this is appreciated. Thank you.

The number of trailers shown before movie is a per-client setting. You cannot “dictate” it on the server for all clients.

Depending on what you mean with ‘native Mac Plex app’ this preference may be found in different places.

If you use the Plex Web app (the one also known as ‘Server manager’) then it is under Settings - Web - Player
If you use Plex Home Theater on your Mac, it is under Preferences - Playback - Extras
If you use Plex Media Player on your Mac, it is under Settings - Main

Thanks Otto, I will take a look further on if I have settings where they need to be. I think they are though.

What is the difference between Plex Home Theater and Plex Media player on the Mac? Aren’t they the same thing?

Simply speaking:
PHT is old
PMP is new (as in, still in development now.)
They are totally different not only in look and feel but also in their technical basis.

As a Plex Pass subscriber you are free to try out PMP. Plus you can add your constructive criticism and feature suggestions in its development forum.

PMP and PHT can be installed in parallel, so there is no harm in testing them both.

If you want to try PHT, you better go directly to OpenPHT, which is a community fork of PHT.

Hi Otto,

Thanks again. I am pretty sure that what I have now is PHT, as I just upgraded to Plex Pass about 1 month ago, but I have had that Plex software on my mac for a few years now. Looks like PMP was just released around February of this year? When you said as a Plex Pass subscriber I am free to “try out” PMP, does this mean that it will be a paid item that I will have to fork out money down the line?

And simply put, is PMP better than PHT?

No. It came last year.

No, definitely not.
As a Plex Pass subscriber you have access to ‘preview versions’. PMP is such a Preview version currently.
It is not finished, but you are welcome to play around with it already.

And simply put, is PMP better than PHT?

See above. PMP is not finished, yet. Some things it does better than PHT, some not.
Only you can be the judge on that, as everyone has different priorities.

so Otto, one more question if you don’t mind. Based on what you know, was Plex Home Theater for mac supposed to have the trailer and pre roll function working? I will double check my settings on the plex media server, but I was pretty certain that I have it set up. When I select the movies from the list however, it just goes straight to the movie. I remembered going through the settings on plex media server, but I never saw settings for PHT. so I was just curious on that end.

You must access the settings in Plex Home Theater itself.
in the main view of PHT, press [left] - Preferences

I’ll double check when I get home later today. I have been in the preferences settings before. But can’t say I have ventured in the playback part of the preferences. Do I need to toggle something to get the pre-roll clip going as well?

I am not sure about that. But pre-roll should work as soon as you turn it to more than 0 trailers.

Hi Otto,

Under preferences for PHT, I only have skin, appearance, videos, music, pictures, system, network, and about Plex. I did not see playback option despite the fact that I drilled through each of these option. I tried going into about Plex to see if I can find which version I am running but it shows nothing of the sort. I will go ahead and uninstall and install the latest PHT on plex’s site and see if I will have better luck.

Well, what does it show?

Just try the newest OpenPHT

So, it had turned out I am running an outdated version of PHT; why it never prompted me to update the app, I haven’t the slightest clue. But as soon as the app was installed and the icon showed up, I knew I was running an older version. I guess it may be super old, cause it won’t even let me find out which version it is!

But all is well and up and running on PHT; trailers are playing and so is the pre-roll clip. Time for me to dive into PMP also. Exciting times ahead. Thanks again Otto!
