I have a question about how Plex Media Server works and network speed. My internet speed is 400 mbps download and 20 mbps upload. If I add one file that has more than 20 GB like maybe 30 or 40 GB, it can cause network issue as I see transcoder error playback sometimes. If I put any movie with HDR that under 20 GB, it should be no problem. I assume it’s because of my upload is 20 mbps which it means I have to keep any movie file under that upload speed? Do I make sense? Let me know.
What matters is its bit rate which can be variable rate of change over time. The larger file size can usually be an indication that the video likely has a large bit rate, all other things being equal.
Think of a video as a sequence of multiple photos. each photo can vary the amount of differences in it. The more difference the more bits it has. A photo of a blue sky is very simple because it only has to know to repeat blue for as many pixels there are so only a few bits needed. A detailed image of a forest with millions of leaves with a large range of colors has a lot of different bits. As the photos play in sequence the amount of data it takes to play over time is the bit rate. A few seconds of an action sequence with lots of changes and high detail will have a higher bitrate than a mostly unchanging few seconds of a persons unmoving face even though they may have the same amount of pixels.
Depending on how powerful your computer is, the transcoder can have trouble lowering the quality (which lowers the bit rate) of a very high quality video such as a raw BluRay remux which can cause buffering or playback failure.
Also even if the transcoder is not in play the bitrate of some scenes of the film may be higher than the rate of your internet upload if playing remotely which will cause buffering or playback failure.
If you Get Info on of the files you can see its file info and it will show its average bit rate over the entire movie. However it can be much larger or smaller at various scenes through out the film.
