Internet speed too slow to play this video on the server

Hello everyone !

I am encountering an issue since few weeks already . as you guessed i am getting the message " internet speed too slow to play this video" when i try to watch a movie

My configuration is :

Plex serv is on my computer ( i7 7700k @5.3ghz)
The app is installed on my xioami mi box s android box
I am connected via wifi on the android box and wired on the computer.
My connection speed is between 300mb-900mb upload and download depending of the time of the day but never lower.

The file size of the movies weight between 5 and 45gb from 1080p to 4k but i am having the problem with every size.

I tried to change the settings to auto conversion ( quality adapting to the bandwitch) it lowered the quality of the movie as if it got recorded with a nokia 3310 but still got buffering problem .

I tried transcoding auto and make my cpu suffer , it doesnt change anything.

Everything is up to date , on the android box or on my computer.i also rebooted everything several times.

If anyone can help me with this issue it would be great, because it is getting very frustrating .

Cheers everyone and sorry for the bad english !

Your English is fine, and it’s probably better than me speaking whatever your native language is

Is this tested from the computer, or tested from the Xiaomi MiBox? I would be interested to know what the speeds are on the MiBox (download Speedtest by Ookla or some other app that tests speed).

I just tested the speed from the Mi Box 200mbps download and 75 mbps upload i did the test 10 times to be sure everything stable, no drops .

Straight after i launched a movie on plex , it auto scaled to 720p/ 4 mbps to be able to play , and i still had buffering !

Do me a favor, turn off the automatic conversion. Play a file, and then go to the server page, look at the dashboard, and tell me, is it DirectPlay, DirectStream, or Transcode?

Even quicker and more informative:

Go to the Plex App settings on the Mi Player, disable the New Player, and enable Display Information.

Play the file, bring up the OSD and read the cause for the transcode - it’s The Remote Quality Setting first. Change that to Original, play again and now bring up the OSD. Still transcoding? If so - what’s the reason?

I did what you say and here is the information on the dashboard

https://gyazo.com/448e88ab88da0ddfab417714f86ce7f9

it says transcode i believe.

Yep… Turn off the subtitles and see if it stops transcoding

I couldnt find the "disable new player feature "

But i managed to get the informations:

it says transcoding from my computer

-Quality 28.7mbps
-Video transcoding (HEVC-H264)
-Audio transcoding (TRUEHD-EAC3)
-Cause of the transcode is " The trueHD audio is not taken in charge by the device

Play ExoPlayer

I hope i answered

That’s odd - Display Information seems to be working tho - that’s good.

Jason can help you fix that HEVC transcode…lol

That’s a big bit rate for HEVC - Jason can help you with that too.

The idea is: Display Information helps you troubleshoot, by telling you what’s going on.

Do one of two things. Either shut of the subtitles and see if the video is still transcoding, or switch the audio track to the regular dolby ac3 track. Plex doesn’t like external subtitles and audio transcoded at the same time…

So i turned off the subtitles ,

and it seems to work better, when i read the informations from the player

The video went from transcoding (HEVC-H264) to copy (HEVC).

now i dont have substitiles for a movie that speaks mainly on sign language haha .

is there a solution to fix this ?

If you need subtitles, is there a secondary audio track for the movie? One that is not true hd?

That made my day - thank you…

AC3 audio track and subtitles (srt) is working like a charm , there is no transcoding on the player info , Just direct playing.

“Plex doesn’t like external subtitles and audio transcoded at the same time…”

I think that explain everything i have to give up on better audio quality if i want subtitles.

So all the transcoding problems has nothing to do with my cpu power ? its on the plex side ?

It’s definitely because your CPU is not powerful enough. Don’t feel bad though, most people’s aren’t, especially for 4K Video.

In this case i finaly found a good reason to switch to AMD on my next upgrade.

I’d like to thank you Jason and Juice for the quick help ! movie night wont be a struggle anymore !
