Plex Playback - your internet connection not fast enough

Server Version#: Version 1.31.2.6810
Player Version#: Shield,. browser and others

I am having strange issues when my family play movies through my media server remotely.

  • When subtitles are turned on, it starts buffering, if video is set to original quality with no transcode requested.
  • If transcode requested, same speed as actuall video, its a bit better with subtitles, however, again it will possibly buffer
  • If no subtitles, it generally doesn’t buffer

My PC is a decent powerhouse: 11th gen inte i7-11700k 3.6ghz
I have tried the above with my server HW transcoding and software transcoding, barely any difference, maybe a bit better with HW.

Is the latest server update the issue? does anyone know, this is extremely frustrating! By the way, things seem to play just fine through my own network. Any and all advise would be really appreciated.

I have some further updates which adds to the strangeness of things. a file that is 20.3GB will not play in original quality, yet plays great when converted to 20GB… is has stumped me. If anyone has an idea do let me know, perhaps it is some kind of setting on the router?

the size of the file does not matter as much as the bitrate of the file. The average is displayed in when viewing Get info for the file. but there can be massive spikes where there is a bunch of stuff going on screen like actions scened and opening credits. If the file has gone through deep analysis then it the XML should have a “required bandwidth” numbers that would be required to play at original quality.
