Does Plex DVR support HEVC?

Contrary to what I researched I was told in the SiliconDust Forums that the HDHomeRun Connect supports the demodulation of every DVB-T2 signal and it’s up to the software what can be livestreamed/recorded.

In my country there is the so-called DVB-T2 HD which uses H.265 (HEVC) and not H.264 like the “normal” DVB-T2.
So my question: Does Plex DVR support HEVC?

I’m ready to pull the trigger on both the Connect HDHR4-2DT & a Plex Pass subscription, I just need confirmation on this before spending ~150€ on it.
Does anybody use a HDHR4-2DT + DVB-T2 HEVC? Or can a Plex employee confirm that Plex DVR supports HEVC recordings?

Here is the confirmation by an SiliconDust employee by the way:

The HDHomeRun CONENCT (HDHR4-2DT) will demodulate, identify, and stream HEVC h.265 video from DVB-T2.

So the device supports it, question is does Plex DVR support HEVC too?

Why not do a $5 monthly subscription first and then if it works out, switch to lifetime?

For what it’s worth, Plex supports HEVC playback and/or conversion provided your hardware is powerful enough. I reckon the setup will probably work.

I don’t own a HDHomeRun yet. It would cost around 130€ to get one. I don’t like to return something if it can be avoided beforehand.
Also I won’t do a $5 monthly subcription, I’d rather buy the $150 lifetime.
Plex regularly has Lifetime $75 discounts based on some weird algorithm. If I choose a monthly subcription now, the algorithm will flag me as a cash cow and I will definitely never get lifetime for $75.

My guess is that like 1% of the original Plex Code is used for Plex DVR. Seems like a project from scratch (ofcourse build on some SiliconDust APIs and maybe even some code from their DVR software depending on their partnership) so I don’t think it’s probable to say Plex HEVC Playback works = Plex DVR HEVC recordings work.

That’s a great question, I’m honestly not sure. I would assume it would work just as well as any HEVC content as we’re not doing anything that special.

To be clear, the DVR part is written by us, nothing to do with the SiliconDust DVR, and we’re reusing 99% of the original code for libraries, transcoding, etc.

Well then I was wrong with my guess that you don’t use much of the original Plex Code

Thanks for the answer. After thinking about it in the last days, I came to the conclusion that I’m not in a rush to get it. I guess I’ll wait for a good discount for the HDHomeRun Connect (maybe even Plex Lifetime for $75) and then I’ll try it myself and report back here.

I ve bin thinking about this a bit. In Germany paying for televion maybe works a bit different than in some other countries. Every household has to pay a fee to the government for “public” stations, which are not controlled by anyone. In adition to that there are some “private” Tv Stations (that are the ones that play the stuff like GoT and US Movies…). In the past they fund them selfes with commercials, but since there are running out some contacts with the german government, they do everything to establish a system, where everyone has to pay for them.
DVB-S for example is in SD Quality for free in Germany but for HD you already have to pay 5,75€/Month/device
DVB-T1 was for free is SD but will shut down this month
DVB-T2 is difficult. The public Stations are still “free”, but for the privat ones, you have to pay 69€ per year per device.
DVB-C basic payment you get the public stations in HD and the private ones in SD on every device and i think for overall HD you have to pay extra and you get 3 deivces.
This means if you are using DVR from Plex, it would be possible to get out of this “per device” payments. I dont think this is legal, but sounds very intersting if it would be working.

At the moment iam using Zattoo (most TVs have an app for it) but there is no working plex plugin for it.
