I’m getting very close to buying the Plex Pass for plex, and an HDhomerun Prime cable tuner. However, the one remaining question I have is will it work anywhere in the world? (ex. streaming channels on plex somewhere that is not on the same network as the HDHOMERUN)
You can setup “remote access” with Plex, allowing you to stream media from your server while away from home. This also goes for streams from your HDHR.
In preparation you can check if this will work with your ISP / data plan…
do you have sufficient bandwidth (here the upstream bandwidth is important as we’re talking about streaming media from your home network to the outside)
does your ISP provide your router with a proper IP address (e.g. no CGNAT where they treat their customers like a home network)
how’s your home network setup – do you have a single home network or is it segmented (e.g. multiple active network devices creating their own subnet)
if you are asking whether there are any geo-based restrictions on where you can stream to/from, the answer is no.
however, only home users (and the admin of course) are allowed to use live tv/dvr functionality.
regular shared user do not get access to live tv/dvr, probably due to geo/legal issues.
plex live tv/dvr is still freely usable, but may go back to plex pass only at some point in the future (ie after pandemic), this means you can try it out yourself once you have an HDHR or other compatible tuner.
‘plex home’ does require plex pass, if you wanted to share live tv/dvr access to other family members.
The only thing I would add to what @TeknoJunky said is your use of the Prime with the CableCard mileage will vary based on your provider and the channels they offer and whether those channels have DRM applied. Where I am at with Time Warner when I first tried CableCard with a HDHR Prime and WMC almost all channels were DRM free at the time many years ago. Now same company new name, Spectrum, when I tried about 18-24 months ago, same HDHR Prime and new CableCard from Spectrum every channel except one local County News broadcast all had DRM applied. Plex does not work with DRM channels. You might get lucky and most channels are DRM free so Plex can use the channels.
