Does Plex play .flv file types on iOS devices?

I can’t get them to play but I thought maybe there is a setting I need to change to make it happen? Thanks.

I just downloaded a reference file/sample video from Adobe to my library and it played alright from the Plex app on my iPhone (iOS 15.6.1, Plex for iOS 8.8 → TestFlight beta). Given how ancient and obsolete that codec is, I doubt Plex just added support for it in its recent player beta.

The video obviously needs to be transcoded – so you might want to check if you have that enabled in your server settings (Settings > [Server Name] > Transcoder).

I don’t mean to be disrespectful… but Is there a particular reason why you keep such outdated files around and not re-encode them to a more up-to-date format (e.g. using Handbrake)?

I’ll reencode. Not sure why. Old file just stumbled upon.

Tom I may be blind but I don’t find “server name” off the Settings menu!?

One more comment! I converted to MP4. Runs fine. Searched my files for other .flvs and sure enough I have some and Plex plays those just fine. :\

Maybe the other file was somewhat broken?
The [server name] part should be a placeholder for your own server’s name which is found below all the settings for the web app (Plex Web > General…)

Looks like your local Plex Media Server is named Plex

Yes but I don’t see any Transcoder listed under that either unless its “locked” somehow. I’m not sure what the green padlock is or how to open it?

Scroll down in the left panel.

Below Status you should see a section named Settings.

Transcoder is in the Settings section.

Here’s an example, where Panoptikum is the name of my server…

The only option to actually disable transcoding on your server should be Disable video stream transcoding.

Edit: the green lock next to the server name means your connection to that server is secure (there should be a small tooltip/popup if you hover over the icon).

Thanks. Yes I have seen that listing. Its set to Automatic and Disable Video Stream Transcoding is not checked. So I should be good to go. That 1 file must have been futzed up. It works fine after changing to MP4.
